Dean Mahomet, 1759 in Patna, Bengalen, geboren, trat im Alter von zehn Jahren der Armee der East India Company bei. Nach 15 Jahren Dienst begleitete er seinen Förderer Godfrey Baker nach Irland, wo er einen an die anglo-irische Elite adressierten Reisebericht veröffentlichte: The Travels of Dean Mahomet. Darin schildert er eingehend seine Aufenthaltsorte in der Armee sowie in den bereisten und eroberten Gebieten. Ausführlich beschreibt er Landschaften, Militärzüge und lokale Bräuche. Die Interpretation des Reiseberichts ist dieser literarisch vollzogenen Selbstverortung gewidmet. Die Autorin schlägt eine analytische Methode vor, die es ermöglicht, Darstellungen von Selbst und Raum als historische Handlungen zu verstehen und somit neues Licht auf die soziale Situation Dean Mahomets zu werfen.
