About the Book
How do media forms and institutions shape what a society recognises as knowledge?
Knowledge does not circulate independently of the forms through which it is communicated. It is produced, organised, authorised, and contested within material and institutional arrangements that influence who may speak, what becomes credible, which ideas reach wider publics, and how their meanings change in circulation. This book examines the relationship among media, knowledge, and authority in the Indian context. Rather than treating media as a neutral channel through which ideas pass, it approaches media forms and institutions as active participants in the constitution of knowledge itself. It asks how changing conditions of communication reorder relationships between expertise and public opinion, inherited knowledge and intellectual innovation, and scholarly production and political power.Bringing media studies into conversation with intellectual history and the sociology of knowledge, the book considers how authority is established, challenged, and redistributed as ideas move between institutions and publics. It explores how modes of communication shape not only the circulation of knowledge, but also the categories through which knowledge becomes intelligible and socially consequential. The result is a focused inquiry into the structures of knowing: who produces knowledge, who certifies it, how it travels, and what happens to intellectual authority when the conditions of its circulation change.
