About the Book

How has India shaped Japanese civilisation across more than a millennium of cultural exchange? This book offers a wide-ranging historical study of the transmission, adaptation and enduring legacy of Indian ideas in Japan, tracing their journey from the arrival of Buddhism in the sixth century to contemporary Indo-Japanese relations.

Moving chronologically from antiquity to the present, Yoshihiro Kaburagi examines the circulation of religions, philosophies, artistic traditions, trade networks, texts and people that connected the two civilisations. The study explores how Indian ideas reached Japan through interconnected networks extending across Central Asia, China, Korea and Southeast Asia before being assimilated, transformed and integrated into distinctive Japanese religious, intellectual and cultural traditions. Alongside Buddhism, it examines the presence of Hindu deities in Japanese religious life, the evolution of aesthetics, pilgrimage, performing arts, political thought, commercial exchange, and the contributions of influential historical figures who deepened connections between India and Japan.

Rather than presenting cultural influence as a one-way process, the book demonstrates how ideas were continually adapted and reinterpreted within Japanese society, producing distinctive cultural forms while preserving enduring civilisational links with India. Combining historical scholarship with comparative cultural analysis, it offers a comprehensive account of one of Asia’s longest and most significant intercultural relationships and makes an important contribution to the study of Indo-Japanese history, Japanese civilisation, and the wider history of cultural exchange in Asia.

About the Author

Yoshihiro Kaburagi

Yoshihiro Kaburagi received his PhD in ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology from Panjab University, Chandigarh, under the Indo-Japan Cultural Exchange Programme. Following a distinguished career with Matsushita Electric (now Panasonic), including service as Deputy Managing Director of National Panasonic India, he devoted himself to the study of ancient Indian history and Indo-Japanese cultural relations.

He has served as Lecturer at Osaka University of Commerce and has been actively associated with academic and cultural organisations promoting exchanges between India and Japan. His research focuses on the historical and cultural interactions between the two countries, particularly the influence of Indian civilisation on the formation of Japanese culture. He is the author of Ancient Indian Influence on Japanese Culture: A Comparative Study of Civilizations.
