About the Book
What was the medieval world, and can its history be understood through Europe alone?

Medieval Worlds: Origins, Nature, Debates, and Exchanges introduces students to the major social formations, cultural patterns, debates, and transformations of the medieval period while placing Europe within a wider world of movement and connection. Ideas and religions, objects and technologies, commodities and institutions, and peoples themselves travelled across regions, shaping histories that cannot be understood in isolation.

Written in alignment with DS 4, ‘Aspects of Medieval World History’, under the National Education Policy 2020, and the UGC-recommended paper ‘Social Formations and Cultural Patterns of the Medieval World’, the book moves beyond the conventional division of history into politics, economy, and culture. It brings environmental history, disease, and climate into the discussion and extends the field of vision to China and Africa.

Part of The Global Fabric: Histories Across Time, Medieval Worlds invites students to see the medieval past not as a collection of separate civilisations, but as a world formed through exchanges, encounters, and connections.
