How did the modern West consolidate itself through the upheavals of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and can that transformation be understood as a European story alone?
The Rise of the Modern West: Europe, 1600-1799
examines a period of profound political, economic, and intellectual change through the connections that linked Europe to wider worlds. From debates surrounding the seventeenth-century crisis and the English revolutions to the rise of modern science, Enlightenment thought, mercantilism, parliamentary monarchy and absolutism, the American and French revolutions, and the beginnings of industrialization, the book explores the transformations that shaped the modern West.Rather than presenting these developments as an isolated European achievement, Rila Mukherjee places them within larger histories of commerce, empire, warfare, and intellectual exchange. It examines how encounters and interactions across regions influenced European societies, institutions, and ideas, while drawing attention to the uneven consequences of these connections and the historical debates surrounding the emergence of modernity.Written in alignment with DS 8, ‘Rise of the Modern West – II [17th–18th Centuries]’, under the National Education Policy 2020, and the corresponding UGC-recommended paper, the book combines historical analysis with maps, illustrations, tables, further reading, and exercises. About the Author
Rila Mukherjee
Rila Mukherjee taught history for thirty-one years at Jadavpur University and the University of Hyderabad. In her teaching and writing on European and world history, she has drawn on original materials in French, Spanish, Portuguese, and English to explain major historical ideas, debates, and changes clearly to students and teachers.
She has written textbooks, reference works, and historical surveys, and has taken part in international research projects on Europe-Asia relations supported by institutions and funding bodies in France, the United Kingdom, and Japan. She has also reviewed research for international funding agencies and institutions, including the European Science Foundation and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
