About the Book
How did Europe become ‘the modern West’, and can that transformation be understood as a European story alone?
The Rise of the Modern West: Europe, 1400-1599
examines a formative period in European history through the connections that linked Europe to wider worlds. Ideas and religions, objects and technologies, commodities and institutions, and peoples moved across regions, while contact, migration, trade, conquest, disease, and environmental change reshaped societies on both sides of the Atlantic.Written in alignment with DS 6, ‘Rise of the Modern West - I [15th-16th Centuries]’, under the National Education Policy 2020, and the UGC-recommended paper ‘Rise of the Modern West - I’, the book places familiar themes of early modern European history within the larger histories of Africa and the Americas. It draws attention to intellectual exchange, political interaction, climate, and the uneven consequences of encounter across time and space.Part of
The Global Fabric: Histories Across Time
, the book encourages students to approach the rise of the modern West not as an isolated European achievement, but as a historical process shaped through connections, encounters, and exchanges.
