About the Book
Economic Dimensions of Buddhism in Early India: From the 6th Century BCE to the 7th Century CE offers a critical examination of the relationship between Buddhism and economic structures in early India. It analyzes the role of Buddhist monasteries and institutions in shaping economic activities such as trade, agriculture, and artisanal production.
The study further investigates the Buddhist Sangha as an economic institution, with particular attention to its engagement in landholding, credit systems, and other financial practices. It also explores the extent to which Buddhist ethical principles, especially non-attachment and simplicity, informed economic behaviour and thought.
By tracing patterns of continuity and change, the book situates economic developments within a broader socio-cultural context, raising important questions regarding the material foundations of ancient Indian Buddhism.
