1857/58: das britische Empire in Indien gerät durch den breitflächigen Aufstand einheimischer Regimenter an den Rand des Zusammenbruchs; in der letzten Phase der Großen Indischen Meuterei tritt eine junge, unerschrockene Frau an die Spitze der rebellischen Streitkräfte: Lakschmibai, die Rani von Jhansi. In Indien wird sie unverändert als hochherzige erste Kämpferin für nationale Unabhängigkeit verehrt. Die Briten bezeichneten sie als ein ruchloses Weibsbild und beschuldigten sie noch hundert Jahre nach ihrem Tod bedenkenlos eines entsetzlichen Massenmords an britischen Familien. Der Autor versucht unter Rückgriff auf Primärquellen in den National Archives of India und der British Library sowie aufgrund von Untersuchungen vor Ort die historische Gestalt der legendären indischen Jeanne d’Arc zu erfassen und von Legenden und gehässigen Verzerrungen befreit darzustellen.

Rainer Jerosch
Rainer Jerosch, geboren 1936, bereiste Indien schon vor seinem Studium der Rechtswissenschaften und verbrachte später als Angehöriger des Bundesministeriums für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung jeweils vier Jahre an der Technischen Universität Madras und der Deutschen Botschaft New Delhi. Er ist Autor einer Anzahl von Aufsätzen zu Fragen der Entwicklungspolitik.
