Le Star of India est un journal en anglais de l’Inde colonisee. Entre 1937, date de la mise en place de la derniere constitution coloniale de l’Inde, et la Partition d’aout 1947, sa clientele, l’elite anglo-musulmane de l’Inde orientale, evolue vers l’idee de separatisme confessionnel et territorial (projet de Pakistan). Pourtant, ce journal ne defend le projet de Pakistan que par intermittence, et de nombreux redacteurs originaires du Bengale occidental, en particulier, defendent, jusqu’au bout, l’idee d’une Inde et d’un Pakistan confederes. Le nationalisme indo-musulman serait donc tres fragile dans l’opinion, au moment des independances.

Thierry Di Costanzo est maître de conférences en ‘Relations Internationales-et-anglais’ à l’Université de Strasbourg. Ses domaines de recherche portent sur l’Inde coloniale, l’histoire des pays anglophones anciennement colonisés, les relations entre nationalisme et journalisme, les autobiographies d’hommes politiques et le « self-writing ». Il a vécu au Bangladesh, en Algérie, en Grande-Bretagne et en Nouvelle-Zélande.
