Colour Me White: A Researcher’s Peek into the Lives of Vrindavan Widows

Ipshita Mitra

About the Book
A field-based account of Vrindavan’s widows that asks what freedom, security and dignity mean on their own terms.
Colour Me White
looks beyond the familiar image of the Vrindavan widow as abandoned, dependent and voiceless. Drawing on fieldwork and personal narratives, Ipshita Mitra explores the lives of widows living in ashrams, shelter homes and rented accommodation, and the choices they make in negotiating family, social convention, economic insecurity and the possibility of living independently.Placing these experiences within the wider social and historical construction of widowhood in India, the book also examines pensions, welfare, property and access to state support through a feminist lens. Refusing to treat widows as a homogeneous category,
Colour Me White
brings into view their differing circumstances, vulnerabilities and aspirations, and offers a nuanced exploration of agency, belonging and women’s autonomy in contemporary India.
