महाबोधि मंदिर और बोधगया मठ: साझा धर्मसाझी विरासत बोधगया के महाबोधि मंदिर और बोधगया मठ के बीच दीर्घ और जटिल ऐतिहासिक संबंध का अध्ययन प्रस्तुत करती है। विशेष रूप से यह शैव गिरि महंतों की उस संरक्षक भूमिका की पड़ताल करती है, जो महाबोधि मंदिर और उसके व्यापक पवित्र परिसर के साथ ऐतिहासिक रूप से जुड़ी रही है। पुस्तक आधुनिक काल में मंदिर की धार्मिक पहचान को लेकर उत्पन्न विवादों को एक व्यापक ऐतिहासिक परिप्रेक्ष्य में रखती है और बोधगया को एक साझा पवित्र स्थल के रूप में देखने का आग्रह करती है।ऐतिहासिक अभिलेखों, विधिक और प्रशासनिक दस्तावेजों, शिलालेखों, औपनिवेशिक विवरणों और आधुनिक काल से संबंधित स्रोतों के आधार पर कर्मतेज सिंह सराओ बौद्ध परम्पराओं, शैव संस्थाओं, औपनिवेशिक प्रशासकों, भारतविदों, राजनीतिक व्यक्तित्वों और अनगारिक धर्मपाल जैसे सुधारकों की भूमिकाओं का विश्लेषण करते हैं। बोधिवृक्ष, मंदिर परिसर, अनुष्ठानिक स्थल, स्वामित्व और संरक्षकत्व, तथा बोधगया की आधुनिक पहचान को आकार देने वाली राजनीतिक और वैचारिक प्रक्रियाएँ इस अध्ययन के प्रमुख विषय हैं।पुस्तक का केंद्रीय तर्क यह है कि महाबोधि मंदिर के इतिहास को केवल किसी एक धार्मिक परम्परा के विशिष्ट अधिकारक्षेत्र के रूप में समझना पर्याप्त नहीं है। बोधगया का इतिहास बौद्ध, शैव, वैष्णव और अन्य धार्मिक परम्पराओं के सहअस्तित्व, अंतःक्रिया और कभी-कभी प्रतिस्पर्धा से निर्मित एक बहुस्तरीय पवित्र विरासत की ओर संकेत करता है। इस दृष्टि से यह पुस्तक महाबोधि मंदिर और बोधगया मठ को एक जटिल, साझा और ऐतिहासिक रूप से विकसित धार्मिक विरासत के रूप में पुनः समझने का प्रयास करती है।

कर्मतेज सिंह सराओ (K.T.S. Sarao) वर्तमान में नालंदा विश्वविद्यालय में साझा बौद्ध विरासत पर एससीओ पीठ के प्रोफेसर हैं। इससे पूर्व वे दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के बौद्ध अध्ययन विभाग में प्रोफेसर और विभागाध्यक्ष रहे, जहाँ उन्होंने अध्यापन, शोध और शोध-निर्देशन के क्षेत्र में दीर्घ योगदान दिया। उन्होंने दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय और कैम्ब्रिज विश्वविद्यालय से पीएच.डी. उपाधियाँ प्राप्त की हैं।
वे बौद्ध धर्म के इतिहास, पालि अध्ययन, बौद्ध संस्थाओं, प्रारम्भिक भारतीय नगरीकरण, पवित्र भूगोल, तीर्थ परम्पराओं और विशेष रूप से बोधगया तथा महाबोधि मंदिर के इतिहास के प्रतिष्ठित विद्वान हैं। उनकी प्रकाशित कृतियों में भारतीय बौद्ध धर्म के उद्भव और पतन, प्रारम्भिक बौद्ध नगरीय केन्द्रों, धम्मपद, महाबोधि मंदिर और बौद्ध-जैन परम्पराओं पर अनेक महत्त्वपूर्ण अध्ययन शामिल हैं।
बौद्ध और पालि अध्ययन में उनके योगदान को अनेक राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मानों से मान्यता मिली है। उन्हें 2011 में बौद्ध अध्ययन में विशिष्ट योगदान के लिए मानद डी.लिट. प्रदान की गई; 2018 में पालि भाषा के क्षेत्र में योगदान के लिए भारत के राष्ट्रपति का प्रतिष्ठा-प्रमाणपत्र मिला; 2020 में भारत सरकार ने उन्हें वैशाख सम्मान प्रशस्ति-पत्र प्रदान किया; और 2025 में पंजाब केंद्रीय विश्वविद्यालय ने उन्हें मानद डी.लिट. से सम्मानित किया।
