About the Book
The Yoga of Nonseparation: Addressing Yoga’s Deeper Dimension of Freedom and Wholeness
offers a sustained reconsideration of the meaning of liberation in Patañjali’s Yoga.Ian Whicher challenges interpretations of classical Yoga that understand its ultimate goal primarily as withdrawal from life, suppression of the mind, or the radical separation of consciousness from embodied existence. Drawing on the philosophical psychology of the
Yoga-Sūtra
, he explores
nirodha
not as the shutting down of mental activity, but as the liberation of the mind from the misidentifications that bind consciousness to a separate sense of self. From this perspective,
kaivalya
need not imply disengagement from embodied existence. Rather, freedom opens the possibility of a fuller integration of consciousness, mind, embodiment, and action. Whicher examines the implications of this understanding for discernment, moral integrity, engagement with the world, and the place of
citta
and the
guṇas
within the transformative process of Yoga.Rooted in sustained scholarship while addressing questions of continuing philosophical and existential significance, the book presents Yoga not as an escape from life, but as a transformation of how life is understood and lived.
