How does the architecture of water transform landscape into cultural memory?Water architecture gives enduring form to the relationship between environment and human settlement. Stepwells and other water structures answered practical needs, but they also became sacred places, civic spaces, architectural monuments, and repositories of collective memory. Their histories reveal how ecological conditions could shape ritual practices, social life, artistic expression, and understandings of place.This book examines Indian water architecture within the wider landscapes that produced and sustained it. Rather than treating stepwells as isolated monuments or as remnants of a vanished hydraulic system, it considers how water, architecture, sacred geography, and patterns of public use became part of a shared cultural world.Moving across regional traditions of premodern and early modern India, the study brings architectural and visual analysis into conversation with environmental history and material culture. It asks how built forms mediate between natural conditions and cultural meanings, and how structures created around water preserve memories of patronage, community, ritual, and historical continuity.Water architecture emerges here as more than an ingenious response to climate and terrain. Jutta Jain-Neubauer
Jutta Jain-Neubauer is an independent art historian specialising in the art, architecture, and material culture of the Indian subcontinent. She studied Indian art history at the Universities of Heidelberg and Bonn, where she received her PhD. Her research focuses on water architecture, miniature painting, textiles, jewellery, and the cultural history of India. She is the author of The Stepwells of Gujarat: In Art-historical Perspective; The Ramayana in Pahari Miniature Painting; Feet and Footwear in Indian Culture; and Chandrika: Silver Ornaments of India; and the editor of Water Design: Environment and Histories.
