Models and Interpretations: Selected Essays, J.A. Barnes
12 Models and Interpretations: Selected Essays

J.A. Barnes

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 1990, 0-521-36653-4 / 9780521366533, First Edition, Hard Cover, Brand New, 16 Cms x 24 Cms
John Barnes’s collection of essays, published over the last forty years, covers a variety of topics in sociology and anthropology, including lineage systems, social networks, colonialism, underlying assumptions of social science, and the significance of time in social analysis. Together they identify the author’s particular view of social science: he is primarily interested in ‘what really happens? Rather than revamp articles written with a distinctive set of assumptions to bring them into line with current intellectual fashion, Professor Barnes has chosen to let them stand as they are, products of identifiable theoretical stance and modes of exposition. But introductory notes to each chapter set out the context in which the piece was originally written and draw attention to later publications and events that bear on it. A new introduction discusses in detail the author’s view of social science as the construction of models rather than a search for social laws, while the final chapter presents a model of the modelling process itself. Contents Preface; Acknowledgements; Introduction: social science in practice; Part I. Models Of The Real Social World: 1. Genetrix: genitor: nature: culture?(1973g); 2. African models in the New Guinea highlands (1962a); 3. Agnatic taxonomies and stochastic variation (1971n); 4. Class and committees in a Norwegian island parish (1954a); 5. The righthand and lefthand kingdoms of God: a dilemma of Pietist politics (1971k); 6. Indigenous politics and colonial administration, with special reference to Australia (1960a); 7. The perception of history in a plural society: a study of an Ngoni group in Northern Rhodesia (1951c); Part II. Models of Social Science: 8. Feedback and real time in social inquiry (1967b); 9. Time flies like an arrow (1971f); 10. Kinship studies: some impressions of the current state of play (1980c); 11. Sociology in Cambridge: an inaugural lecture (1970m); 12. Stepping Out: Life and Sexuality in Rural India, Mrinal Pande
17 Stepping Out: Life and Sexuality in Rural India

Mrinal Pande

Penguin, New Delhi, India, 2003, 0-14-302942-8 / 9780143029427, First Edition, Paperback, New, New, 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Consider the following: Eleven out of twelve abortions in India are illegal. The 2001 Census showed a decline in the number of females per thousand males in the most literate and prosperous states, especially in the 0-5 age group. The private sector has more doctors and fewer beds than government hospitals, thereby emphasizing outpatient care. And while Indian traditions sanctify fertility and motherhood, government policies and health care services are focused on controlling fertility. These are some of the paradoxes of India’s health care system Mrinal Pande encountered when she set out on her journey across several states to put together information on the health of Indian women. She soon realized it could not be a mere documentation of the history of reproductive health in India and the state of India’s public health care system. Through listening to women’s perspectives on their bodies when they came for treatment and conversations with dedicated health workers, she gained an insight into larger realities. The result is a patchwork quilt of narratives about women’s lives—how they are affected by their environment, their perspectives on male and female sexuality, the mystery of pregnancy, the joy of birth, the fear of infertility, the pain of backroom abortions and the often bleak world of adolescent girls. Mrinal Pande also discusses important issues like the population policies followed by the government over half a century and the consequences of a welfare state abdicating its obligation to provide basic health care for all in its pursuit of globalization and market economics. Through it all she reveals enormous faith in the role of non-governmental organizations in providing better health care services—the dedicated doctors and attendants who are making a difference, helping women step out from the dark bylanes and silences of their lives to create a socio-cultural milieu which restores their basic dignity and rights.
