10 Buddhist Critical Spirituality: Prajna and Sunyata

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 2001, 8120817982 / 9788120817982, Hard Cover, New, New,
This book comprises fifteen research articles primarily based on the discipline of Indian and Buddhist Studies. The collection is designed to propose a Buddhist philosophy of religion--that the insight of Prajna and Sunyata initiates a future religion which is freed both from conflict between reasoning and believing, and from goal-oriented cycles of life. It addresses transformation from the conflict-ridden quest for a supreme being, to the search for a non-theistic nature of spirituality that provides a foundation for universal human happiness and salvation. For the discipline of Buddhist Studies, this collection also demonstrates the productive value of drawing upon cross-cultural and cross-racial literary sources and traditions. 12 Buddhist Legends: Translated from the original Pali text of the Dhammapada Commentary, 3 Vols

Eugene Watson Burlingame

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 2012, 81-215-0879-7 / 9788121508797, Reprint, Hardcover, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Dhammapada or way of Righteousness is the name of the canonical books of the Buddhist sacred scriptures. It is written in the Pali Language. It consists of 423 stanzas. These are reputed to be the very words of Buddha. The Dhammapada commentary (in Pali Dhammapad-Attha-Katha) is ascribed to Buddhaghosa, the greatest of all the Buddhist scholastics. This aspiration is without due warrant, as appears from translator's Introduction. The commentary purports to tell us "where, when, why, for what purpose, with reference to what situation, with reference to what person or persons," Buddha uttered each of these stanzas. In so doing, the author of the commentary narrates 299 legends or stories. These stories are the preponderating element of the commentary, and it is these which are here translated. 15 Christian Pluralism in the United States: The Indian Immigrant Experience

Raymond Brady Williams

Cambridge University Press, New Delhi, India, 1996, 0-521-57016-6 / 9780521570169, First Edition, Paperback, New,
Recent immigrant Christians from India are changing the face of American Christianity. They are establishing churches with Orthodox, Protestant, and Catholic rites. This book is the first comprehensive study of these Christians, their churches, and their adaptation. Professor Williams describes migration patterns since 1965, and how the role of Indian Christian nurses in creating immigration opportunities for their families affects gender relations, transition of generations, interpretations of migration, Indian Christian family values, and types of leadership. Contemporary mobility and rapid communication create new transnational religious groups, and Williams reveals some of the reverse effects on churches and institutions in India. He notes some successes and failures of mediating institutions in the United States in responding to new forms of Christianity brought by immigrants. Contents Introduction; 1. Road to America; 2. Christian stories about India; 3. Becoming what you are: St Thomas Christians from Kerala; 4. Becoming what you are: Catholics and Protestants from India; 5. 28 Introduction to Tantra: The Transformation of Desire

Lama Yeshe; Foreword By Philip Glass

Wisdom Publications, Boston, USA, 0-86171-162-9 / 9780861711628, First Edition, Paperback, New, 6 x 9 Inches
What is tantra? Who is qualified to practice it? How should it be practiced? What are the results? According to Buddhism, every human being has the potential to achieve profound and lasting happiness. And according to the tantric teachings of Buddhism, this remarkable transformation can be realized very quickly if we utilize all aspects of our human energy -- especially the energy of our desires. Introduction to Tantra is the best available clarification of a subject that is often misunderstood. This new edition of this classic text includes a new foreword by Philip Glass and a new cover design, but leaves untouched Lama Yeshe''s excellent original text, edited by Jonathan Landaw. Tantra recognizes that the powerful energy aroused by our desire is an indispensable resource for the spiritual path. It is precisely because our lives are so inseparably linked with desire that we must make use of desire''s tremendous energy not just for pleasure, but to transform our lives. Lama Yeshe presents tantra as a practice leading to joy and self-discovery, with a vision of reality that is simple, clear, and extremely relevant to 21st-century life. Printed Pages: 192. 014109

A fascinating and illuminating ’visual biography?of one of the greatest spiritual teachers from India ?the buddha?contains a selection of writings from Buddhist scriptures and ancient texts. Tom Morgan, editor of the widely acclaimed book on the Dalai Lama - counterpoises them with excerpts from literary classics like Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha, scholarly accounts by Buddhist monks, and an extract from a sensational interview with William Parker, a death-row prisoner’s conversion to Buddhism as he awaits his sentence of execution at the Arkansas Prison System. The book also contains a brilliantly written essay that separates the grain from the chaff surrounding the Buddha’s ’enlightenment?by Karen Armstrong, a well-known religious scholar. Plus an intensely personal experience of a 20-year old young american boy’s encounter, in a narrow dusty lane, with the Buddha. This brilliant ’visual biography?is embellished with absolutely gorgeous photographs of the art and architecture inspired by Buddhism ?the world over. Exquisitely photographed by Glen Alison and lavishly presented in this authoritative book on the Buddha. By special arrangement with New World Library. Printed Pages: 144. 003051

The Dharma of Dragons and Daemons: Buddhist Themes in Modern Fantasy, David R. Loy and Linda Goodhew
45 The Dharma of Dragons and Daemons: Buddhist Themes in Modern Fantasy

David R. Loy and Linda Goodhew

Wisdom Publications, Boston, USA, 2004, 0-86171-476-8 / 9780861714766, First Edition, Paperback, Brand New, 15.5 Cms x 23 Cms
Many books are called groundbreaking, but this one is truly unique and sure to appeal to anyone with an interest in fantasy literature. It employs a Buddhist perspective to appreciate some of the major works of modern fantasy - and uses modern fantasy fiction to elucidate Buddhist teachings. In the tradition of David Loy''s cutting-edge presentation of a Buddhist social theory in The Great Awakening, this pioneering work of Buddhist literary analysis, renown scholar David Loy and Linda Goodhew offer ways of reading modern fantasy-genre fiction that illuminate both the stories themselves, and the universal qualities of Buddhist teachings. Authors examined include J.R.R. Tolkien, Philip Pullman (of The Amber Spyglass trilogy, from whose works the word "daemon" is borrowed in the title), Ursula K. LeGuin, and the anime movie Princess Mononoke. Printed Pages: 166. 008325

50 The Path of the Buddha: Writings on Contemporary Buddhism

So compelling is the story of Prince Siddhartha Gautama that it loses none of its sheen with a retelling. Impelled by a desire to deal with the sorrows of human existence, he renounces the world when barely twenty-nine and finds Buddhism. Giving Buddha’s spiritual journey a contemporary dimension, this anthology contains essays by spiritual leaders like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche and Lama Thubten Yeshe on the impact of Buddhist philosophy on them. Equally poignant are the accounts of others who, dissatisfied with the present world, embark on a search for salvation. Urged by a seemingly simple notion, Donna Brown starts her quest to find a really ‘good?person; a journey which takes her from the heart of Canada to Nepal’s remote Kopan monastery. An inexplicable restlessness takes Robina Courtin from dabbling in drugs, political activism and martial arts to finding truth as a Buddhist nun. Though born into a Sikh family, Dharmakirti grows up in Sikkim amidst Buddhist monasteries, maroon-robed monks and monastic rituals, and eventually chooses the philosophy of Tibetan Buddhism over science. For Kabir Saxena, Buddhism offers a practical path in this broken, imperfect world. Varied and meaningful, The Path of the Buddha provides a rare glimpse into Buddhism. Printed Pages: 248. 002778
