3 Ajanta

Amina Okada with an Introduction By Andre Bareau

Brijbasi Art Press, Noida, U.P. India, 1996, 81-7107-034-5 / 9788171070343, First English Edition, Hard Cover, New, New, 27 Cms x 31 Cms Jean-Louis Nou
About hundred kilometres to the north of Aurangabad, in the state of Maharashtra, in the heart of the Indhyadri ranges, are the imposing Ajanta caves. Carved in the rock of a steep cliff, overlooking one of the meanders of the Waghora, thirty rock shrines are spread out over six hundred metres, in an arch overhanging the river. It is in this ideal retreat a conducive haven for meditation and con&127&127&127&127templation, that from the 2nd century before Christ till the beginning of the &127&1277th century, Buddhist monks decided to retire and build this spectacular &127&127monastery in rock. The Ajanta caves, with their compelling architecture, their outstanding high-reliefs and sculptures, the remarkable richness and variety of the canopies and profusion of the shafts of their carved columns, are universally admired for the beauty of their paintings. These paintings, which decorate the walls, the columns, the door frames, the ceilings, illustrate, in a very detailed and precise fashion, about thirty avadana, or jataka extracted from the vast body of tales, poems and belleds, sanctified and edifying tales attributed to the Buddha who, it is said, narrated them to his disciples. These tales relate the history of the various incarnations of the blessed one. While being religious in nature, the Ajanta paintings--the latest and the most famous ones--express the extreme refinement of the period which gave rise to them, a period of unprecedented artistic and cultural culmination in northern India, then governed by a dynasty which was at the height of glory, political and economic power and territorial expension : the Gupta dynasty. The kaleidoscope that is India comes to evocative life in its capital, Delhi, where a succession of cities have influenced the country's fortunes over centuries. If Delhi provides a tantalising glimpse of India's history, caught in a time-warp of the past and the present, then Agra--once also the capital of the country--is a shrine for worshippers of beauty. It leitmotif is the Taj Mahal, humankind's purest, most beautiful requiem to love. At the third end of the Golden Triangle is Jaipur, the provincial capital of Rajasthan. The book captures the ambience of these three cities, in words and pictures, blending them together to offer a fascinating glimpse of enduring India. Annabel Lopez

Roli Books, New Delhi, India, 2004, 81-7436-284-3 / 9788174362841, First Edition, Paperback, New, New, 11 x 8.5 Inches
If you were to drop a bomb on Goa, it would land either on a cross or on a tavern - so goes the saying. Goa: Paradise on Sea faithfully represents it. The book is strongly marked by the Goan passion for life, which is on song the whole of 365 days. The ubiquitous singing, the famed beaches, the inevitable tot of wicked feni, the typical Goan-Portuguese cuisine do not leave space for much seriousness. Goa talks of the small state, liberated from 450 years of colonial rule in 1947, which is also heir to a unique inter-religious culture. Christian altars are decorated with Hindu motifs; Hindus, Christians and Muslims celebrate Carnival and Shimogi (the Goan festival of lights). Half the female population prefers the sari; others are comfortable in trousers and Western dresses. All, however, bow to the sweet spirit of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Goa. Religious edifices unerringly index the glorious heights to which architecture aspires in Goa. Well-appointed homes and elegant mannerisms attest to its people’s warmth. Goa imbibes everything of the Goan spirit and is a heady read. Printed Pages: 79 with colour illustrations. 000642

India in Slow Motion, Mark Tully
15 India in Slow Motion

Mark Tully

Penguin, New Delhi, India, 2003, 0-14-303047-7 / 9780143030478, First Edition, Paperback, New, New, 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Mark Tully is incomparable. No foreign commentator has a greater understanding of the passions, the contradictions, the charms and the resilience that constitute India. In India in Slow Motion, Tully and his colleague Gillian Wright delve further than ever before into this nation of over one billion people, attempting to unravel a culture that, famously, has always resisted unravelling. India in Slow Motion is the account of a journey that for Tully and Wright has no true beginning or end. Covering a diverse range of subjects—from Hindu extremism to child labour, Sufi mysticism to the crisis in agriculture, the persistence of political corruption to the problem of Kashmir—this book challenges the preconceptions others have about India, as well as those India has about itself. India is often depicted as a victim of forces too wild to be controlled—of post-colonial malaise, of religious strife, of the caste system, of a corrupt bureaucratic machine. India in Slow Motion refutes this, probing into the heart of the Indian experience and arguing that change is possible and that solutions do exist. In the process it brings the country and its people brilliantly alive. Printed Pages: 320. 000570

With its old castles and lakes, its intricate interior decorations and rich desert colours, its plush palaces and royal aura, Jaipur occupies a stronghold on the Indian tourist map. It is Rajasthan's most flamboyant city and boasts of a martial heritage like none other. Ruled over by the valiant and hardy Rajputs, Jaipur has seen and survived brutal history, including changes from the Mughal to the English, and finally, Indian rule. Its tradition of valour is surpassed only by its reputation as an unchallenged manufacturing-cum-marketing centre for all that is exotic and exquisite in Indian art: jewellery, gem stones, miniature paintings and enamelled objets d'art. Founded in the eighteenth century, it is also showcases architecture's grand theme. The scale of its many forts evokes an era that made space for life, passion and war; their walls echoing the danger-frought, chivalrous and whimsical lives of its royals. In Royal Jaipur, this fascinating city finds an able narrator. Printed Pages: 80 with numerous coloured and b/w illustrations. 000814

36 Trails to Inmost Asia: Five Years of Exploration with the Roerich Central Asian Expedition

George N. Roerich with a Preface By Louis Marin

Book Faith India, New Delhi, India, 1996, 81-7303-032-4 / 9788173030321, Reprint, Paperback, New, New, 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Inner Asia, with its towering mountain ranges and seemingly unending deserts and steppes, has always been an endless lure to the explorer and traveller. This work compiles invaluable records and a mine of information collected by the remarkable expedition conducted for five years through the various countries of Central Asia. It opens for the scientific world new knowledge of the history and contemporary life of that region of the Roof of the world which is of deep interest geographically and sociologically. "From Tibet, Roerich brings back a scientific picture of the life and civilizations of the high plateau. The exclusive feature of Roerich's study is the strong arguments in justification of the theory concerning ancient civilization of the nomads whose territory extended from the Gobi desert and the border of Korea to the lower Danube and the Carpathian mountains. On the uplands of Tibet and in the country of the trans-Himalayas, the expedition carefully studied and photographed many hitherto unknown monuments. "Following in the footsteps of his famous mystic father, Nicholas, George Roerich has faithfully recorded his visits to the Buddhist monasteries which constitute an inestimable treasure for the study of the region. The pictorial record of land and peoples of the inner Asia and an extensive collection of ethnographical and linguistic material represents a fascinating contribution of the first order in the understanding of these lost civilizations.
