4 A Very Popular Exile: An Omnibus Comprising 'The Tao of Cricket'; 'An Ambiguous Journey to City'; Traditions, Tyranny, and Utopias'

Ashis Nandy; Introduction By Imtiaz Ahmed

Oxford University Press, New Delhi, India, 2010, 0195693221 / 9780195693225, First Paperback Edition, Paperback, New, 15 x 23 Cm
This is a collection of three significant works of Ashis Nandy - The Tao of Cricket, An Ambiguous Journey to the City, and Traditions, Tyranny, and Utopias. In The Tao of Cricket, Nandy shows how a game once identified with the British Empire and a preserve of the British gentry - is now more South Asian than English. He examines the sneaking entry of the modern urban industrial ethic and mass culture into a game that used to thrive on its ability to be a living critique of modern life. Through the story of Indian cricket, he attempts a systematic analysis of world-views, ideologies, cultural exchanges, and political choices. An Ambiguous Journey to the City - concerned with the apparently territorial journey between the village and the city - captures some of the core fantasies and anxieties of Indian civilization over the past century. Nandy argues that the decline of the village from the creative imagination of Indians in recent decades has altered the meaning of this journey drastically, and that the true potentialities of Indian cosmopoloitanism cannot be realized without renegotiating the myth of the village. Traditions, Tyranny, and Utopias is a collection of essays on the modern West and its cultural and psychological impact on the East. Nandy analyses, brilliantly and insightfully, aspects of East-West relationship - from Western visions, which have displaced all other ideals of a good society, to Western histories that have displaced all other posts of the East. Yet, the apparently defeated have, through the likes Gandhi and Senghor, tried to subvert the West's construction of the rest and to ensure cultural survival and on open-ended future. This volume is essential reading for social scientists, policymakers, activists and anyone interested in the way Indian politics and culture are now enmeshed with a global struggle to protect human dignity and democratic values. This is the third omnibus edition of Ashis Nandy's writings, the first two being Exiled at Home and Return from Exile. 033872

22 Enclosed Waters: Property Rights, Technology and Ecology in the Management of Water Resources in Palakkad, Kerala

Jyothi Krishnan

Orient BlackSwan, New Delhi, India, 2009, 812503692X / 9788125036920, First Edition, Paperback, New, 14 x 22 Cm
Enclosed Waters looks into the social and ecological factors that have given rise to the persistent problem of water scarcity in the paddy-growing regions of Chittur taluk in Palakkad district, Kerala, South India. The book views water scarcity as an outcome of the existing unsustainable and inequitable mode of water resources management and distribution. It critiques the single-crop-focused irrigation and agricultural policies of the state since the 1960s to the neglect of local specificities. It studies the impact of supply oriented, large-scale canal projects and inter-basin transfers of water on the management of local water sources, primarily the ponds (kulams) of the area. Jyothi Krishnan observes how the current policy emphasis of the decentralisation agenda of the state on local level water resources has approached the issue of sustainable water management. The book further illustrates how the implementation of land reforms in the state has resulted in an inequitable distribution of rights to water. It also discusses how increasing private control over water abrogates public and common rights, resulting in both unsustainable and inequitable use and distribution. Reviewing the creation of public and private rights over a fluid and common pool resource such as water, Krishnan argues that issues of ecological sustainability should be central to the framing of property rights. She suggests that the recurring problem of water scarcity necessitates a thorough reconsideration of existing irrigation and agricultural policies as well as a rethinking on the formulation of the existing property rights over land and water. Meticulously researched in the library and field, Krishnan’s book aligns property rights, technology and ecology in fascinatingly thoughtful ways. Printed Pages: 332. 031467

27 Food for Beginners

Susan George

Orient BlackSwan, New Delhi, India, 2007, 8125031979 / 9788125031970, Reprint, Paperback, New, Nigel Paige
This is not a cookbook. It contains food for thought and the recipes of power. 800 million people live under the constant threat of famine. Most are food producing peasants in the Third World. The baffling question is: why are so many food producers, rather than we, their consumer, the first to go hungry? Susan George takes a cold, clear look at the facts and myths of food production, and provides answers. She consider its history, from its origin 10,000 years ago to the Global Supermarket of today. Cliches and half-truths about over-population, climate and inefficient farming, usually given as the reason for Third World hunger, are discarded. She expose the ruthless game of multinational agri-business, the methods of new Malthusianism and neo-colonialism. She unmasks pious aid programmes and reveals the basis of further exploitaiton. FOOD FOR BEGINNERS is a disturbing book: the facts are grim, the picture bleak. But the wit, sheer logic and force of this documentary comicbook, point beyond despair to justice. Dale Carnegie

Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster, New York, USA, 2010, 1439199191 / 9781439199190, Revised Edition, Paperback, New, New, 10.5 x 17.5 Cm
How to Win Friends and Influence People was a path-breaking publication. It was one of the first bestsellers in the self-help genre. The first edition of the book came out in the 1930s during the Great Depression. In the book, Dale Carnegie shows readers how to get out of the mental monotony that long conditioning has put them in. It teaches them to be bold enough to try out new ideas and see situations from a new perspective. The book teaches readers how to convert people to one’s way of thinking, without making them feel manipulated. The book can help team leaders, sales persons, and managers acquire better skills at handling people. The book also teaches people how to get good jobs and how to make a success out of the job that they already have. Carnegie teaches readers how to present a different viewpoint to people without offending them, by respecting their viewpoint too.The book gives simple but effective tips on communication like remembering people’s names, being a good listener, and displaying a genuine interest in other people. During the 1930s, Dale Carnegie’s self-help courses became very popular. Leon Shimkin of Simon & Schuster persuaded Carnegie to allow the publishing house to bring in someone to take notes during his lectures, which were later to be published in book form. The book became a bestseller, and in 1981, a revised edition was released with updated language and new anecdotes. First published in the 1930s, this book contains advice and tips that are still relevant today. Printed Pages: 276. 037780

44 India's Silicon Plateau: Development of Information and Communication Technology in Bangalore

R.C. Mascarenhas

Orient BlackSwan, New Delhi, India, 2010, 812503708X / 9788125037088, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 15 x 23 Cm
India’s Silicon Plateau is a study of the development in India of information and communication technology (ICT). The author has emphasised the political, historical and institutional factors, acknowledging the role of the central and state governments. India's policy of import substitution and its science and technology infrastructure, bringing together universities, industry and government provided a solid foundation for growth. The author believes that India's ICT revolution predates the 1991 economic liberalisation, resulting from the high quality of human resources that was a product of institutions established earlier. He has outlined the catalytic roles played by the Electronics Commission, the Department of Electronics, the Computer Maintenance Corporation, the Centre for the Development of Telematics, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computers, and the Science and Technology Parks of India. The spotlight is turned on Bangalore, in the Deccan Plateau, resembling USA's Silicon Valley as a pioneering hub for the ICT industry, which has earned it the sobriquet of India's Silicon Plateau. With its equable climate and cosmopolitan openness, Bangalore was seen as an ideal location for the establishment of public sector industries like Bharat Electronics. In the mid-1980s, the favourable environment created by the Karnataka government attracted several multinationals into Bangalore. In a reversal of the brain drain, Indian technologists based abroad are returning to the congenial Karnataka capital. While showing the contours of the progress in the ICT industry, the book dwells in particular on the flowering of Bangalore as India's premier city for the computer age. Printed Pages: 296. 032724

Jon Platania

Orient BlackSwan, New Delhi, India, 2007, 8125031677 / 9788125031673, Reprint, Paperback, New, Joe Lee
Carl Gustav Jung merged Eastern mysticism with Western psychology, brought scientific respectability to religion, laid the foundation for 'the New Age', and is second only to Freud in influence and importance. So it is easy to see why some people consider him a genius. But others... Put it this way: Some people are so good that all we can do is look up to them. He was a great man who made great mistakes. The two most (in) famous events in Jung's life were his break with Freud and his sojourn with the Nazis. Most books on Jung minimize his Nazi period. Author and psychologist Jon Plantania, finds nazism too hideous to minimize, so he tells this part of the story without pulling any punches Platania then takes us on a tour to the work that made Jung one fo the Pillars of modern psychology. And what a body of work it is! Jung's open-mindedness was astonishing Wherever he went - Calcutta, Egypt, Palestine, Kenya - Jung learned something that expanded his views. His open-ended psychology incorporated yoga, meditation, prayer, alchemy, mythology, astrology, numerology, the I ching - even flying saucers! he taught us that psychology and religion can not only coexist peacefully together, but that thet can enhance us, inspire us, and help us complete ourselves.
