17 Tomatoes : Tales from Kashmir is a series of linked stories that revolve around two Sikh boys coming of age in an Indian Army camp in Kashmir. Each story takes a minor character from the previous tale and builds a new tale, weaving a collective portrait of the border community. In addition to the boys, Adi (a student of gardens) and Arjun (a budding chemist), we meet a boatman’s daughter, a celebrity cricket umpire and Parachute Aunty. From modern missiles to cricket matches, from religious miracles to the sumptuous gardens of Shalimar and Nishat, Singh treats beauty, politics, and religion in a gentle and humane manner. 11 A Fighting Spirit: Selected Writings of Ashoka Gupta

Jasodhara Bagchi (Intro.), Sarmistha Dutta Gupta & Narayani Gupta (Comp. & Eds)

Niyogi Books, New Delhi, India, 2012, 9789381523650, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 16 x 24.5 Cm
An active career spanning seven decades is unusual. And to describe Ashoka Gupta (1912-2008) simply as a ‘social worker’ is not enough. Till the last day of her life, she was a dynamo, who generated exhilaration and energy in those around her. In this volume, we have tried to capture her personality through her own writing and through the recollections of others. The earliest piece by her was published in 1945, the last written in 2004. They vividly convey the ethos of the times-the terrible 1940s, through war, famine, riots, and Partition-situations when actions spoke more strongly than words. The tragedy of Partition was overtaken by the excitement and anticipation of nation-building. For Ashoka Gupta the ideals of the Indian constitution were realistic, and needed to be strengthened by ceaseless hands-on work at the grassroots. Twenty years later, she stood by her husband to battle the injustices done to the refugees from East Pakistan who had migrated in the 1960s and were being ‘rehabilitated’ in the wilderness called Dandakaranya. This book will be of value to scholars of history, sociology and women’s studies, for those working on Mahatma Gandhi, on communitarian relations, on legislation pertaining to women, and on institutional frameworks, particularly the All-India Women’s Conference. A Handbook of Pali Literature, Oskar Von Hinuber
15 A Handbook of Pali Literature

Oskar Von Hinuber

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 2015, 8121507782 / 9788121507783, Third Indian Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 15 x 23 Cm
The Handbook deals with the whole of the literature in Pali, the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism, which is still alive in Ceylon and South-East Asia. In addition to reviewing the canonical texts (Tipitaka) which forms the oldest body of extant Buddhist literature, and their commentaries, the Handbook presents the later Pali literature, written after the 12th century, much of which is only available in Oriental prints. The account not only summarizes the findings of earlier research, but extends the scope of a handbook by demonstrating new methodological approaches to the canonical literature, for example by showing how the strict formal structure of the Sutra texts is determined in part by their oral transmission. Questions of the authorship of the commentaries on the canon (post-5th century AD) are revisited and the chronology of the texts critically examined. By comparing parallel commentaries, insights are gained into the structure of this comprehensive structure. Access to the Handbook is provided by a number of indexes. Printed Books: 270. 016563

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 1993, 81-215-0454-6 / 9788121504546, Second Revised and Enlarged Edition, Hardbound, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The ballads of Rajput prowess, the aphorisms of Kabir, Tulsidas, Ramayana, the bhajans of Sur and Mira, the poetical rhetoric of Kesava, the closed-packed epigrams of Behari, the lyrics of mystics Prasada, Pant and Mahadevi make Hindi literature an 'enchanted garden'. The present work seeks to give a glimpse of that 'enchanted garden' to those whose mother-tongue is not Hindi. At the end there is an anthology of Hindi verse containing best pieces of the 'nine gems' of mediaeval Hindi. A glance through the anthology may enduce the reader to read the full text in the original. From the Chhandas of the Vedas to the Khadi Boli of the present day is a long span of five thousand years. From Chhandas to Sanskrit, from Sanskrit to Prakrit, from Prakrit to Apabhramsa, from Apabhramsa to local dialects Dingal, Pingal, Avadhi, Brajbhasa, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Bundeli, Dakhani, and finally a wrench from the past and the birth of a new language, the Khadi Boli of today-is a phenomenon unparalleled in the history of any language. Foundation Books, New Delhi, India, 8175962593 / 9788175962590, First Edition, Paperback, New,
Contemporary Indian Writers in English (CIWE) is a series that presents critical commentaries on some of the best-known names in the genre. With the high visibility of Indian writing in English in academic, critical, pedagogic and reader circles, there is a perceivable demand for lucid yet rigorous introduction of several of its authors and genres. The CIWE texts cater to a wide audience - from the student seeking information and critical material on particular works to the general, informed reader who might want to know a little more about an author she has just finished reading. Cast in a user-friendly format, and written with a high degree of critical and theoretical rigour, the texts in the series will provide astute, accessible, informed entry-points into a wide range of works and writers. CIWE, we hope, will further strengthen the interest in and readership of one of the most significant components of world literatures in English. 37 Ardhanarisvara in Art and Literature

Neeta Yadav

The scholarly work throws light on the artistic, aesthetic, literary and philosophical aspects of the Ardhanarishvara form of Shiva ?the form which is a divine expression of the amalgamation of the male and the female and is said to contain the whole world in it. Providing a conceptual and historical back-ground of the doctrines relating to Shiva and Shakti worship ?it involves an iconographical study of the Ardhanarishvara image, with the focus on its dress, ornaments, coiffure, posture and other features. With many visuals of the Ardhanarishvara images ?even the unpublished ones, it describes the images found in different parts of india and discusses the emergence of the deity relying on literary sources and theories. Explaining how the idea and actual representation of the unity of Shiva and Shakti came to acquire supreme importance with the growth of sects ?each worshipping the deity in its own form, Dr. Yadav points out that the Ardhanarishvara aspect is basically the output of the Tantra philosophy. Providing maps and line-drawings and a list of the places that have yielded Ardhanarishvara images, she makes an interesting and indepth analysis, based on extensive field-work, to come up with some brilliant and new explanations of the meaning and implications of the Ardhanarishvara. 38 Art of the Intellect: Uncollected English Writings of Sudhindranath Datta

Sukanta Chaudhury (ed.)

Chronicle Books, New Delhi, India, 2008, 8180280330 / 9788180280337, First Edition, Hard Cover, New, New, 15 x 23 Cm
This volume contains all the recoverable English writings of the Bengali poet and critic Sudhindranath Datta, outside those already gathered in an earlier collection, The World of Twilight. They include a hitherto unknown introduction for a projected Oxford Book of Bengali Verse, drafted by Sudhindranath for the proposed editor, Rabindranath Tagore. Other pieces testify to his informed interest and original thought about Indian and European literature, ancient history, international politics, philosophical speculation and the social mores of his time. There are also a number of book and theatre reviews, and many other pieces that he wrote for The Statesman. The range of subjects and depth of treatment reflect one of the most erudite and original minds of Bengal's post-Tagore, post-Independence generation. They recreate the political, cultural and intellectual milieu of that age of transition. The core material is drawn from the Datta archives at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Some of it was never published. Other items may have been printed but are virtually untraceable: they have been recovered from drafts and typescripts. Some pieces have been recovered from The Marxian Way, other rare journals, and from The Statesman archives. The volume is edited by Sukanta Chaudhuri with an Introduction by Amiya Dev. Bahina Bai and Her Abhangas, Krishna P. Bahadur
42 Bahina Bai and Her Abhangas

Krishna P. Bahadur

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 1998, 81-215-0787-1 / 9788121507875, First Edition, Hardbound, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Bahina Bai, a Maharashtrian saint-poet, was born in Devagava, a village about two hundred miles from Bombay (now Mumbai), in a poor family of farmers. She was of religious bent of mind, but her husband was averse to her devotional trend, and particularly to the saint Tukarama who was of low caste, and whom she chose as her guru. Her devotion to Tukarama was also resented by other members of the higher caste. The cruel treatment of her husband and others, even made her think of suicide. However she persisted in her complete submission to Tukarama, and ultimately her family members relented. Bahina's abhangas (verses) written in Marathi, depict a rational attitude which tries to lay bare things threadbare. In this she is unique among the saints. Bahina is not as well known as she deserves to be. This book, with a detailed introduction giving her life and times and her art, along with an English translation in part verse and part prose, aims at making her work better known both here and in the West. The great novelist and thinker Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (1838–94), associated with his famous hymn ‘Vande Mataram’, is sometimes seen as mainly a creator of Hindu nationalist icons. This is unfortunate, for Bankim was an enormously learned man, a deep and subtle thinker. A relatively unknown side of his work comprises his religious and philosophical thought, in particular his carefully argued ideas on Hinduism. This collection of Bankim’s writings—many translated into English for the first time and excerpted from the author’s Complete Works in the Bengali original—brings out some of the inner anxieties and ambivalence within the novelist-intellectual’s work on religion, ethics, and philosophy. By reading this book one may detect in Bankim a rational-functionalist approach to religion, as also a deepening faith and piety transcending that intellectual perspective. Bankim anticipates contemporary scholarship in claiming that Hinduism is the common name given to a variety of religious thoughts and practices; and yet, paradoxically, his writings—all penned in the colonial era of Indian subjecthood—also argue for a common Hindu heritage, as well as a unified religious and cultural world for contemporary Hindus. A substantive Introduction and detailed annotations help to situate Bankim’s life and thought in his times. Printed pages: 391. 036880

Maharsi Vedavyasa was staying in his hermitage at Badarikasrama. One day the celestial hermit Narada turned up there in the course of his usual wanton rambles. The great Vyasa welcomed him with due rites, and on his taking seat, asked: "Prophet of Gods! The soul of man seeks to get free from the hold of pleasure and pain, and craves for deliverance from the bondage of the world. But the path of Action (karma) does not lead directly to the goal. Knowledge (jnana) of course, does; nevertheless, without the leaven of Devotion it can achieve very little in substance. Devotion (bhakti) is the only way of attaining salvation; all the others have importance only insofar as they are auxiliary to it. Therefore I humbly ask you to explain to me the doctrine of Devotion." The divine Narada at once surveyed the mind of Vyasa and replied, "Great sage! You have come down on earth for the redemption of mankind. Your present enquiry has been prompted by that desire alone. By you disciple Jaimini, you have already in the Purvamimamsa discoursed upon the problem of Action, and you have yourself completed the enquiry into the problem of knowledge in the Uttaramimamsa. And now you have taken up the problem of Devotion. I am going to explain it. But its full explanation will be given by you in your Srimadbhagavatam which will be a nature of a commentary upon your Brahmasutras. My sutras will be read as such an explanation of your very short description of Devotion given in the Uttaramimamsa." Printed Pages: 64. 001231
