1 A Better India, A Better World

N.R. Narayana Murthy

Allen Lane, New Delhi, India, 2009, 067008283X / 9780670082834, First Edition, Hard Cover, New, New, 16 x 24 Cm
With one of the highest GDP growth rates in the world and an array of recent achievements in technology, industry and entrepreneurship, India strides confidently towards the future. But, in the world’s largest democracy, not everyone is equally fortunate. More than 300 million Indians are still prey to hunger, illiteracy and disease, and 51 per cent of India’s children are still undernourished. What will it take for India to bridge this great divide? When will the fruits of development reach the poorest of the poor, and wipe the tears from the eyes of every man, woman and child, as Mahatma Gandhi had dreamt? And how should this, our greatest challenge ever, be negotiated? In this extraordinarily inspiring and visionary book, N.R. Narayana Murthy, who pioneered, designed and executed the Global Delivery Model that has become the cornerstone of India’s success in information technology services outsourcing, shows us that a society working for the greatest welfare of the greatest number—samasta jananam sukhino bhavantu—must focus on two simple things: values and good leadership. Drawing on the remarkable Infosys story and the lessons learnt from the two decades of post-reform India, Narayana Murthy lays down the ground rules that must be followed if future generations are to inherit a truly progressive nation. Built on Narayana Murthy’s lectures delivered around the world, A Better India: A Better World is a manifesto for the youth, the architects of the future, and a compelling argument for why a better India holds the key to a better world. 2 A Fighting Spirit: Selected Writings of Ashoka Gupta

Jasodhara Bagchi (Intro.), Sarmistha Dutta Gupta & Narayani Gupta (Comp. & Eds)

Niyogi Books, New Delhi, India, 2012, 9789381523650, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 16 x 24.5 Cm
An active career spanning seven decades is unusual. And to describe Ashoka Gupta (1912-2008) simply as a ‘social worker’ is not enough. Till the last day of her life, she was a dynamo, who generated exhilaration and energy in those around her. In this volume, we have tried to capture her personality through her own writing and through the recollections of others. The earliest piece by her was published in 1945, the last written in 2004. They vividly convey the ethos of the times-the terrible 1940s, through war, famine, riots, and Partition-situations when actions spoke more strongly than words. The tragedy of Partition was overtaken by the excitement and anticipation of nation-building. For Ashoka Gupta the ideals of the Indian constitution were realistic, and needed to be strengthened by ceaseless hands-on work at the grassroots. Twenty years later, she stood by her husband to battle the injustices done to the refugees from East Pakistan who had migrated in the 1960s and were being ‘rehabilitated’ in the wilderness called Dandakaranya. This book will be of value to scholars of history, sociology and women’s studies, for those working on Mahatma Gandhi, on communitarian relations, on legislation pertaining to women, and on institutional frameworks, particularly the All-India Women’s Conference. Aung San Suu Kyi is the face of the Burmese people’s struggle to free themselves from the military regime that has been ruling their country for years. She hails from a distinguished family that has an extensive history of offering service to the country. Her father, Aung San, established the Burmese army and successfully negotiated with the British for Burma’s independence in 1947. Aung San was assassinated by political enemies. Aung San Suu Kyi was educated in a Methodist School. She is a Theravada Buddhist, and while she was growing up she met people from various religious, social, and political backgrounds. She pursued her graduation studies at Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi when her mother, Khin Kyi, was serving as the Burmese Ambassador for India. She later continued her studies at Hugh’s College, Oxford. She married Dr. Michael Aris, a Western authority on Tibetan and Burmese culture and Buddhism. Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband visited Burma in 1988. Aung San Suu Kyi stayed back and became involved with the political movement. She became the General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD). The party won the 1990 general elections, but the military dictatorship put Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest. Her husband, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, was not allowed to visit her. She has continued her struggle against the Burmese military junta for years. This book chronicles the political and economic history of Burma and Aung San Suu Kyi’s life history. The author has conducted a series of interviews with Aung San Suu Kyi in order to write this book. This was an effort to convey her message of social justice and political freedom for the Burmese people to the world. Printed Pages: 259. 037572

21 Imagining India: Ideas for the New Country

Nandan Nilekani

Allen Lane: An Imprint of Penguin Books, New Delhi, India, 2008, 0670081965 / 9780670081967, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 16 x 24 Cm
Since the early 1990s, India has witnessed great social, political and cultural change. As the world’s largest democracy, its most diverse nation and one of its fastest growing economies, India is now, sixty years after Independence, universally regarded as an emerging superpower. In this sweeping and comprehensive book, one of the country’s finest and most dynamic minds examines the central ideas that have shaped modern India, and offers an original perspective on our past, present and future. Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, who has been a key player in India’s growth story, points out that the country’s future rests on more than simply economic growth; it also depends on reform and innovation in all sectors of public life. Looking closely at India’s recent history, he examines the ideas and attitudes that evolved with the times and contributed to the country’s progress, as well as those that kept it shackled to old, unproductive and fundamentally undemocratic ways. He discusses how India’s early socialist policies, despite good intentions and astonishing idealism, stifled growth and weakened democracy; how, contrary to received wisdom, the country’s large and overwhelmingly young population has now become its greatest strength; how information technology is revolutionizing not just business but also governance in the everyday life of a vast majority of Indians; and how rapid urbanization is transforming both society and politics. Nilekani also gets to the heart of charged debates about caste politics, labour reform, infrastructure, higher education, the English language in India and the role of the state in a globalized world where the wealth of big corporations exceeds that of some nations. And as he does this, he asks the key questions of the future: how will India as a global power avoid the mistakes of earlier development models? Will further access to the open market continue to stimulate such extraordinary growth? And how will this growth affect—and be shaped by—the country’s young people? India is in the middle of a huge transformational process, Nilekani argues, and only a safety net of ideas—from genuinely inclusive democracy to social security, from public health to sustainable energy—can transcend political agendas and safeguard the country’s future. Debabrata Sinha

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 2003, 81-215-1076-7 / 9788121510769, First Edition, Hardbound, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Among the academic philosophers who built up that edifice of contemporary Indian philosophy, Kalidas Bhattacharyya holds a unique position in respect of originality as well as breadth of creative thinking. Joining critical analysis and methodology with constructive insights, he introduced an in-depth comparative approach in interpreting the Indian philosophical tradition, while offering a framework of metaphysics on fresh grounds. The present author, in this study of Bhattacharyya’s subtle and wide-ranging thought from a close quarter, highlights its major strands and traces the course of its development in its different phases. The distinctive character of his philosophizing is brought into focus, while at the same time interpreting the significance and relevance of Bhattacharyya’s philosophical contribution for the present-day thinking and culture. The work combines sympathetic understanding with critical analysis in presenting Kalidas Bhattacharyya in the perspective of a total philosopher of his generation, and for generations to follow. 43 Rajmata Gayatri Devi - Enduring Grace

Dharmendar Kanwar

Roli Books, New Delhi, India, 2004, First Edition, Hard Cover, New, New, 9 x 7.5 Inches
Rajmata Gayatri Devi...Enduring Grace traces the life and times of one of the most admired icons of modern India. Educated in England, Switzerland and Shantiniketan, Gayatri Devi of Cooch Behar, ‘the princess from the east? became the third wife of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur. In a tradition-bound set-up, she participated in religious ceremonies, played tennis with male partners, went swimming and horse riding, and did not miss a single season of polo. She also took it upon herself to bring the women of Rajasthan out of the purdah. Vogue voted her as one of the Ten Most Beautiful Women in the World, and with time, the world also witnessed her political courage and her dignified acceptance of life’s vicissitudes—the loss of her only child Jagat, a five-month ordeal in Tihar Jail under Mrs Indira Gandhi’s regime? Rajmata Gayatri Devi is about the continuation of a charmed life despite all odds, about the grace with which a queen of the erstwhile Jaipur State today dons the mantle of the Rajmata or Queen Mother of Jaipur. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dharmendar Kanwar studied at the Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls Public School and went to university in Jaipur. She started her writing career immediately after finishing school and did campus reporting for youth magazines like Hi, Young People’s Newspaper, Junior Statesman and Youth Times. Over the last twenty-five-odd years she has done scripts for television documentaries, been involved in heritage conservation, and contributed stories to almost all the major magazines and newspapers in the country. In the late '80s, she took to travel writing and did a coffee-table book Rajasthan and several booklets/brochures on Rajasthan that won national awards. Dharmendar Kanwar has edited, designed and published Gourmet’s Gateway by Rajmata Gayatri Devi, co-authored Delhi-Agra-Jaipur and written Fifty Years of Rajasthan Police. 44 Ranjit Singh: Maharaja of the Punjab

Khushwant Singh

Penguin, New Delhi, India, 2008, 0143065432 / 9780143065432, First Edition, Paperback, New, 13 Cms x 20 Cms
The classic biography of one of India’s greatest rulers Ranjit Singh was in every way as remarkable a man as his contemporaries, Napoleon and Mohammed Ali. From the status of petty chieftain he rose to become the most powerful Indian ruler of his time. His empire extended from Tibet to the deserts of Sindh and from the Khyber Pass to the Sutlej. His army was one of the most powerful of the time in Asia and was the first Indian force in a thousand years to stem the tides of invasion from the north-west frontiers of Hindustan. This is the first detailed biography of the first and only Sikh ruler of the Punjab by a Sikh writer who has devoted many years of his life to research on Sikh history. In this classic work Khushwant Singh presents Ranjit Singh as he really was. Based on Persian, Punjabi and English sources and drawing upon the diaries and accounts of European travellers like Moorcroft, Sir Alexander Burne, Masson, Fane and Emily Eden, this is a memorable account of the pageantry and brilliance of the Sikh Kingdom at the height of its power, and a lively portrait of one of the most colourful characters in Indian history. 'Khushwant Singh has retained the flavour and taste of those heady times when the Sikh cavalry galloped to victory on every battlefield they happened to traverse. With this classic work, he has brought alive yet another colourful chapter in Indian history.' —The Indian Express ‘A memorable account of the pageantry and brilliance of the Sikh kingdom at the height of its power'—Financial Express. 45 Rewriting History: The Life and Times of Pandita Ramabai

Uma Chakravarti

Zubaan, New Delhi, India, 8185107793 / 9788185107790, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New,
This book outlines the reconstitution of patriarchies in nieneteenth century Maharashtra through an exploration of the life, work and times of Pandita Ramabai, one of India's earliest feminists. It examines the manner in which the colonial state's new institutional structures, caste contestations, class formation and nationalism transformed and reorganised gender relations. It also explores the nature of the new agendas being set for women, how these were received by them and in what ways and to what extent their consent to these reconstructed patriarchies was produced. The author shows that while many women were ready to act as willing reproducers of caste, class and gender norms, there were others who withheld consent to the dominant model of patriarchy emerging in the nineteenth century. She argues that certain processes in nineteenth century Maharashtra created the conditions for a fairly sharp critique of patriarchy to emerge, a unique feature for its time. This new edition comes with a fresh introduction that details recent discussions on issues of patriarchy, class and gender particularly in the context of Maharashtra; it also addresses issues raised in some new books on the life of Ramabai. Contents Prologue 1. Caste, Gender and the State in Eighteenth Century Maharashtra 2. Caste Contestation, Class Formation, Nationalism and Gender 3. Law, Colonial State and Gender 4.
