A History of Ancient Coinage 700-30 BC, Percy Gardner
5 A History of Ancient Coinage 700-30 BC

Percy Gardner

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 1975, 81-7069-063-3 / 9788170690634, First Indian Edition, Cloth, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Percy Gardner's A History of Ancient Coinage is an outstanding work on ancient numismatics covering the period between 700 BC and 300 BC. It gives in detail the development of ancient coinage and is based mainly on the Greek coinage during this important period of ancient history. In the present work, Gardner has divided the period of early coinage into two parts, the first covering period upto 480 BC and the second between 480 and 300 BC. His approach to the subject is different from the early writers in as much as he has discussed the coinage of the cities in groups rather than separately and has traced the lines of trade influence from district to district thereby discerning the reasons why particular coin standards found acceptance in one locality or another. He has supplemented the material by including the history of Greek and Asiatic and Italian coinages as a continuous activity. The work is divided into three parts. In the Introduction, Gardner has discussed Greek trade-routes, classes of trades, bankers, early mutual relations of precious metals, rights of coinage, monetary alliances, mother-city and colony, standard currencies, monometallism and bimetallism, dating of Greek coins, hoards and fabric. In the next two parts is discussed the coinage of early Greek cities including those areas which became a part of the Hellenistic empire, besides a chapter on the coins of Phillip and Alexander. In the eleven plates are illustrated the important coin types with detailed explanation of each in the index to plates. A detailed General Index is also appended at the end of the volume for easy reference. Printed Pages: 479 with 11 coin plates. 028835

Catalogue of the Coins of the Andhra Dynasty, the Western Ksatrapas, the Traikutaka Dynasty and the "Bodhi" Dynasty, Edward James Rapson
18 Catalogue of the Coins of the Andhra Dynasty, the Western Ksatrapas, the Traikutaka Dynasty and the "Bodhi" Dynasty

Edward James Rapson

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 1975, 81-7069-056-0 / 9788170690566, First Indian Edition, Hardcover, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
E.J. Rapson's Catalogue of the Coins of the Andhra Dynasty, etc., is a valuable reference book for scholars interested in the study of early dynasties of western and eastern India. The work is of great importance since for the reconstruction of a full and accurate account of the history of these dynasties, coins have provided the main source of information. The present Catalogue includes the coins of the Andhra dynasty and its feudatories, the Western Ksatrapas including the families of Ksaharata, Castana and Rudrasimha II, the Traikutaka and the 'Bodhi' dynasty. In a scholarly Introduction, Rapson has eminently succeeded in presenting a cogent history of these dynasties by correlating also the evidence from inscriptions, Puranic sources and archaeological finds. In this extremely useful Introduction of over two hundred pages he has given the outline of the history of the Andhra dynasty from inscriptions, coins and other sources, notes on the inscriptions of the Andhra, Iksvaku, Western Ksatrapa and Abhira dynasties, Puranic dynastic lists, coins of the Andhra dynasty, history genealogy and coins of the Western Ksatrapas, the history and coinage of the Traikutaka dynasty, the coins of the 'Bodhi' dynasty, the types and symbols, denominations, weights and metals and coin-legends besides palaeographical notes on the inscriptions. He has thus been able to clear many obscure points relating to the reconstruction of the history of these dynasties. In the catalogue proper, all the details about the coins of these dynasties have been recorded with scholarly notes on debatable matters. At the end of the volume are given indexes of kings and rulers, types, symbols and adjuncts, dates on coins of Western Ksatrapas besides a historical, geographical and miscellaneous index. The volume also contains a map and twenty-one plates illustrating the coins and coin-legends. Printed Pages: 476 with 21 coin plates. 031492

Coins and Currency Systems in South India c. AD 225-1300 is a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the coinage of the post-Satavahana and pre-Vijayanagara period. The author has studied and utilized all the published material on the subject and has also thoroughly examined several collections of coins with a view to ascertaining afresh the problems of chronology and dynastic affiliations of coins. The work also has a corpus of coins which describes and gives detailed references to over 400 coin-types and varieties. In the two chapters on the currency system of south India, Chattopadhyaya has not only drawn upon numismatic material but also on a variety of other sources, including epigraphy and literary. He has discussed the significance of various coin series including the Roman and the Chinese, which have been found from a number of sites in south India, and has discussed their significance in the context of currency system. An added feature of this work is the discussion focusing on the problem of adjustment of exchange value between different types of coins in circulation. Chattopadhyaya has given a detailed list of epigraphical references to coins between the third and the thirteenth century in an appendix which substantially supplements the corpus of coins.
