Its object is to acquaint the readers with the forces and factors moulding the society and culture of Assam through the ages. It analyses the salient features of Assamese civilization giving proper weightage to the contributions made by different tribes or ethnic groups of both the hills and the plains as well as by the followers of different faiths towards its growth and development. The work is divided into four parts. Part I gives a brief idea of the present state of Assam. It also discusses the source materials as well as the pre-history and the proto-history of the land. Part II deals with the ancient period beginning with the legendary kings till the dismemberment of the ancient kingdom of Pragjyotisha or Kamarupa in the close of the twelfth century AD. Part III treats the history of the medieval period from the rise of different tribal states on the ruins of the ancient kingdom till the fall of the Ahom monarchy in 1826. Part IV deals with the modern period covering the history of the British rule upto the attainment of the country's independence in 1947. It also contains a chapter dealing briefly with the events after independence. The authoress has made full use of all available sources, published and unpublished, preserved in different libraries within and outside the state. 24 A Comprehensive History of Jainism, 2 vols. Vol. I: From the Earliest Beginning to AD 1000, Vol II: AD 1000-1600

Asim Kumar Chatterjee

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 2000, 81-215-0930-0 / 9788121509305, Second Revised Edition, Hardbound, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In this book an attempt has been made to write to a comprehensive and connected account about Jainism from 800 BC to the time of Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Jainism is older than Buddhism and first to protest against Brahmanical Hinduism, though most of the authorities on Jainism were Brahmins by birth and a few Ksatriyas also took part in the propagation. Parsvanatha, who was the real founder the penultimate tirthamkara of the religious system, lived 250 years before Gautama Buddha, Vardhamana Mahavira a contemporary of Buddha was the twenty-fourth and the last Tirthamakara of this religious system whereas Rsabhanatha was the first Tirthamkara. Mahavira made Jainism vastly popular with the masses of northern India. Afterwards from first century BC Jainism became popular in south India. Inspite of systematic vilification by Buddhist and the Brahmins, Jainism still continues to be a dominant religious system in India. Printed Pages: 305. 016353

27 A Concise History of India

Barbara D. Metcalf and Thomas R. Metcalf

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2008, 0521733103 / 9780521733106, Second Edition, Paperback, New, 135 x 215 Mm
Two distinguished historians, Barbara Metcalf and Thomas Metcalf, come together to write a new and accessible account of modern India. The narrative, which charts the history of India from the Mughals, through the colonial encounter and independence, to the present day, challenges imperialist notions of an unchanging and monolithic India bounded by tradition and religious hierarchies. Instead the book reveals a complex society which is constantly transforming and reinventing itself in response to political and social challenges. The book is beautifully composed and richly illustrated. It will be essential reading for anyone who wants to understand India, her turbulent past and her present uncertainties. Contents 1. Sultans, Mughals and Pre-Colonial Indian Society; 2. Mughal Twilight: the emergence of regional states and the East India Company; 3. The East India Company Raj, 1772?850; 4. 28 A Concise History of Modern Architecture in India

Jon Lang

Permanent Black, New Delhi, India, 2010, 81-7824-305-9 / 9788178243054, First Edition, Paperback, New, 19 x 25 Cm
This is an invaluable book for those who want to understand the geography of their cities, as well as for students of Indian architecture. In lucid language that speaks to laymen and architects alike, Jon Lang provides a history of Indian architecture in the twentieth century. He analyses its tangled developments from the founding of the Indian Institute of Architects during the 1920s to the present diversity of architectural directions. He describes the often contradictory tugs of the international and the local as he reviews architects?efforts to be up-to-date in their work. Lang examines the early influences on Indian architecture both of movements like the Bauhaus as well as prominent individuals like Habib Rehman, Jawaharlal Nehru, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. He looks at monuments, museums, resettlement colonies, housing, offices and movie halls all over India in his wide-ranging survey. Over 150 photographs and line drawings explain and illustrate concepts outlined in the text.Printed Pages: 214. 032356

29 A Concise History of Modern India (Second Edition)

Barbara D. Metcalf and Michael R. Metcalf

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2008, 0521733103 / 9780521733106, Second Edition, Paperback, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In a second edition of their successful Concise History of Modern India, Barbara Metcalf and Thomas Metcalf explore India's modern history afresh and update the events of the last decade. These include the takeover of Congress from the seemingly entrenched Hindu nationalist party in 2004, India's huge advances in technology and the country's new role as a major player in world affairs. From the days of the Mughals, through the British Empire, and into Independence, the country has been transformed by its institutional structures. It is these institutions which have helped bring about the social, cultural and economic changes that have taken place over the last half century and paved the way for the modern success story. Despite these advances, poverty, social inequality and religious division still fester. In response to these dilemmas, the book grapples with questions of caste and religious identity, and the nature of the Indian nation. Contents List of illustrations Preface to the second edition Preface to the first edition Glossary Chronology 1. Sultans, Mughals and pre-colonial Indian society 2. 32 A Concise History of the University of Cambridge

Elisabeth S. Leedham-Green

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 1996, 0-521-43978-7 / 9780521439787, Paperback, New,
This concise, illustrated history of the University of Cambridge, from its thirteenth-century origins to the present day, is the only book of its kind in print and is intended as a standard introduction for anyone interested in one of the world’s greatest academic institutions. Many individuals are celebrated here who have exerted great influence upon developments within the University and beyond. But forces for change have often come from outside the University, from central government or from the aspirations and expectations of society at large. One of the prime objectives of this book is to describe how the university has reacted to, or resisted, these external pressures. At the same time it conveys an impression of the day-to-day experiences of students and their teachers and administrators over the University’s 700-year history. Major university institutions, such as the University Press and the University Library, are also described briefly. The book contains many attractive and often unusual illustrations, of subjects ranging from medieval manuscripts to the striking new building projects of the 1990s.
