3 A Carnival of Parting: The Tales of King Bharthari and King Gopi Chand as Sung and Told By Madhu Natisar of Ghatiyali, Rajasthan

Ann Grodzins Gold (Translated with an introduction and afterword)

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 1993, 81-215-0622-0 / 9788121506229, First Indian Edition, Hard Cover, New, New, 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Madhu Natisar Nath is a farmer with no formal schooling. Here is also a singer, a musician, and a storyteller. At the center of present work are Madhu Nath's oral performances of two linked tales about the legendary Indian kings, Bharthari of Ujjain and Gopi Chand of Bengal. Both characters, while still in their prime, leave thrones and families to be initiated as yogis-a process rich in adventure and melodrama, one that offers unique insights into popular Hinduism's view of world renunciation. Authoress presents these living oral epic traditions as flowing narratives, transmitting to Western readers the interactive dimensions, the moods, and the pleasures of a village bard's performance. Three introductory chapters and an interpretive afterword, together with an appendix on the bard's language by David Magier, supply the work with a richly detailed ethnographic, historical and cultural backdrop. Authoress gives a frank and engaging portrayal of the bard Madhu Nath and her work with him. She examines the Nath caste and their oral epic traditions as an important stream within North Indian Hinduism, showing how Madhu Nath's versions of Bharthari's and Gopi Chand's well-known tales surface as distinctive moments within complex legendary and historical currents. While embellished with miraculous displays of magical powers and evocative of profound spiritual dedication, the tales translated here are most profoundly concerned, authoress argues with human rather than divine realities. In a compelling afterword, she highlights the thematic emphases on politics, love, and death. Although both narratives frequently invoke as ultimate authority the causal black hole of fate, they in no way acquiesce to fatalism. Madhu Nath's vital colloquial telling of Bharthari's and Gopi Chand's stories depict renunciation as inevitable and interpersonal attachments as doomed, yet celebrates human existence as a "carnival of parting." 13 A Postcolonial People: South Asians in Britain

N. Ali, V.S. Kalra, and S. Sayyid (eds)

Hurst & Company, London, UK, 1850657971 / 9781850657972, First Edition, Paperback, New,
The diversity and complexity of British Asian life is plain for all to see and has been celebrated in literature, poetry and film, not to mention performing arts and music. Till now, however, an accessibly written introductory volume on the South Asian presence has been absent from our bookshelves. A Postcolonial People is an innovative and intriguing blend of scholarship and reportage on the multi-faceted experience of British Asians covering everything from discrimination to bhangra, Bradford to chicken tikka, Asian Britsih cultural landscapes to arranged marriages. Eschewing both anthropological approaches and overtly theoretical analyses, the contributors map out the heterodox impact of British Asians on the United Kingdom, detailing their achievement and setbacks, points of intersection and divergence as a postcolonial people and everyday lives. 25 Accelarating Growth and Job Creation in South Asia

Ejaz Ghani and Sadiq Ahmed (eds)

Oxford University Press, New Delhi, India, 2009, 0198060041 / 9780198060048, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In recent times, South Asia has attracted global attention for demonstrating rapid growth. What is not so well known is that this is the least integrated region in the world. South Asia has opened its door to the rest of the world but remains closed to its neighbours. Poor market integration, weak connectivity, and a history of conflict have created ‘two South Asias? The first is dynamic, urbanized, globally integrated, and rapidly growing; the second is rural, impoverished, and lagging. Accelerating Growth and Job Creation in South Asia provides fresh perspectives on these issues by exploring the link between regional integration, economic growth, and job creation. The outcome of a high-level dialogue between the private sector, political leadership, policymakers, and academics in South Asia, this volume is an important contribution to the debates in this area. The volume is organized along three themes—overview of South Asia’s growth opportunities and challenges; sources of growth and policies for the future; and the significance of regional cooperation in promoting growth. The essays combine quantitative data with analytical rigour to provide innovative suggestions in terms of policies and institutions that can propel South Asia towards higher growth, while promoting inclusiveness. 027591

26 Adivasis and the Raj: Socio-economic Transition of the Hos, 1820-1932

Sanjukta Das Gupta

Orient BlackSwan, Hyderabad, India, 2011, 8125041982 / 9788125041986, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 15 x 23 Cm
While recent research on adivasis under colonial rule tends to focus on issues of identity politics, categories and definitions, it is important to emphasise that the histories of adivasis were shaped by the constantly evolving British policy towards them, their own unique features, socio-cultural traditions, and the nature of their integration within the colonial state, which in turn determined their self-definitions and their relations with others. This book brings back a focus on the colonial history of adivasis and discusses the issue of their identity against this background. It is a study of the Hos of Chota Nagpur from 1820, when they first came into contact with the British, to 1932, when their protests took the form of religious reform movements in an attempt to develop a distinct tribal identity. In their encounter with the British, the Hos were confronted with several challenges, such as their role in the changing political system; their right of access to local territory and forest resources; the growing influx of outsiders into their villages; and the restructuring of indigenous institutions of authority. While dealing with these circumstances, albeit with varying degrees of success, the Hos developed an ethnic and political awareness vis-?vis the British, other adivasis, and the non-adivasi population, leading to the Haribaba movement for self-purification and other socio-religious reform movements. Meticulously researched and replete with statistical data, a detailed glossary and bibliography, this insightful volume will be useful for scholars and students of history, sociology and anthropology. 28 Adoption of Health Technologies in India: Implications for the AIDS Vaccine

Indrani Gupta, Mayur Trivedi, and Subodh Kandumathan

Sage Publications, New Delhi, India, 2007, 0761935908 / 9780761935902, First Edition, Paperback, New,
The effectiveness of a new health technology is judged by both its accessibility and also the extent to which it has been adopted in a particular country. With the possibility of an AIDS vaccine in the near future, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) has emphasised the need for countries to prepare well in advance for its smooth access and adoption. Reiterating IAVI`s appeal, this book ably captures the course India needs to take for the successful adoption and implementation of the AIDS vaccine in India. The first of its kind, this book examines the adoption of four health technologies in India—Hepatitis B, No Scalpel Vasectomy, Voluntary Counselling and Testing and Antiretroviral Treatment. Using a set of parameters, the authors not only bring to light the various dimensions, strengths and weaknesses of adoption of health technologies in India, but also how and where more attention needs to be paid with regard to the adoption of the AIDS vaccine. Orient BlackSwan, New Delhi, India, 2008, 8125035265 / 9788125035268, First Edition, Paperback, New, 14 x 22 Cm
That we all live longer is perhaps one of the greatest achievements of human progress. Yet increased life expectancy and lower fertility rates across the globe are having a huge impact on the structure of populations, offering both challenges and opportunities for the future. Ageing and Development is an authoritative analysis of the social and economic implications of this trend. Can we provide enough pensions for old people to live comfortably? How can old people be empowered to play a more positive role in society? What will the role of grandparents be in the emerging new social structures? What are the implications for health services? How can the very old be cared for? Providing a wealth of statistical and quantitative evidence and compiled by leading economists working at the forefront of this area, this book argues that these challenges are not insurmountable, but societies everywhere need to put in place the required policies to confront these challenges effectively. This is a timely and definitive guide to the impact of ageing populations. Printed Pages: 272. 031429

50 Anthropologists Inside Organisations: South Asian Case Studies

Devi Sridhar

Sage Publications, New Delhi, India, 2008, 8178298864 / 9788178298863, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New,
In the past ten years there has been a shift in the field of anthropology towards working with and studying organisations. Anthropologists Inside Organisations addresses this need by bringing together seven diverse case studies based in/on South Asian countries, analysing how anthropologists have negotiated issues that arise from interacting with organisations.
