5 Alluvial Geoarchaeology: Floodplain Archaeology and Environmental Change (Cambridge Manuals in Archaeology Series)

A.G. Brown

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 1997, 0-521-56820-X / 9780521568203, First Edition, Paperback, Brand New, 18 Cms x 25 Cms
This comprehensive manual is designed to give archaeologists the necessary background knowledge in environmental science required to excavate and analyse archaeological sites by rivers and on floodplains. Part I covers the techniques for studying alluvial environments, while Part II reviews the literature on the archaeology of alluvial environments and presents new information on alluviation and site formation in both the British Isles and Mediterranean. An important theme running through the book is the interaction between climatic and cultural forces and the transformation of riverine environments. Bringing together information on the evolution and exploitation of floodplain and river landscapes, it draws on examples from Britain, Europe, North America and Australasia. Alluvial Geoarchaeology will also interest physical geographers, geologists and environmental scientists. Contents Introduction and the example of the Nile; Part I. Principles: 1. Floodplain evolution; 2. Alluvial environments over time; 3. Interpreting floodplain sediments and soils; 4. Floodplain ecology, archaeobotany and archaeozoology; Part II. Application: 5. Artifacts from floodplains and rivers; 6. The rise and fall of forested floodplains in North West Europe; 7. Buried sites; 8. Managed floodplains; 9. The cultural archaeology of floodplains; 10. People, floodplains and environmental change; Appendices: 1. River flow and sediment transport; 2. Flood frequency analysis; 3. Documentary evidence and wetland perceptions. 9 Archaeological Theory and Scientific Practice: Topics in Contemporary Archaeology

Andrew Jones

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2001, 0-521-79060-3 / 9780521790604, First Edition, Hard Cover, Brand New, 16 Cms x 24 Cms
Is archaeology an art or a science? This question has been hotly debated over the last few decades with the rise of archaeological science. At the same time, archaeologists have seen a change in the intellectual character of their discipline, as many writers have adopted approaches influenced by social theory. The discipline now encompasses both archaeological scientists and archaeological theorists, and discussion regarding the status of archaeology remains polarised. Andrew Jones argues that we need to analyse the practice of archaeology. Through an analysis of archaeological practice, influenced by recent developments in the field of science studies, and with the aid of extensive case studies, he develops a new framework which allows the interpretative and methodological components of the discipline to work in tandem. His reassessment of the status and character of archaeology will be of interest to students, scholars and professionals. Contents 1. The archaeology of ‘two cultures? 2. Science as culture: creating interpretative networks; 3. Archaeology observed; 4. Materials, science and material culture: practice and narrative; 5. Material culture and materials science: a biography of things; 6. A biography of ceramics in Neolithic Orkney; 7. Making people and things in the Neolithic: pots, food and history; 8. Before and after science. Printed Pages: 222. 009442

Myths of the Archaic State: Evolution of the Earliest Cities, States, and Civilizations, Norman Yoffee
30 Myths of the Archaic State: Evolution of the Earliest Cities, States, and Civilizations

Norman Yoffee

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2005, 0-521-52156-4 / 9780521521567, First Edition, Paperback, Brand New, 17.5 Cms x 25 Cms
In this ground-breaking work, Norman Yoffee shatters the prevailing myths underpinning our understanding of the evolution of early civilisations. He counters the emphasis in traditional scholarship on the rule of ‘godly?and despotic male leaders and challenges the conventional view that early states were uniformly constituted bureaucratic and regional entities. Instead, by illuminating the role of slaves and soldiers, priests and priestesses, peasants and prostitutes, merchants and craftsmen, Yoffee depicts an evolutionary process centred on the concerns of everyday life. Drawing on evidence from ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, China and Mesoamerica, the author explores the variety of trajectories followed by ancient states, from birth to collapse, and explores the social processes that shape any account of the human past. This book offers a bold new interpretation of social evolutionary theory, and as such it is essential reading for any student or scholar with an interest in the emergence of complex society. Contents 1. Evolution of a factoid; 2. Dimensions of power in the earliest states; 3. The meaning of cities in the earliest states and civilizations; 4. When complexity was simplified; 5. Identity and agency in early states: case studies; 6. The collapse of ancient states and civilizations; 7. Social evolutionary trajectories; 8. New rules of the game; 9. Altered states: the evolution of history. Printed Pages: 292. 009429

In this volume, archaeologists offer a new direction for burial research by expanding the models for mortuary analysis from a site-specific to a regional level. 41 Territory, Time and State: The Archaeological Development of the Gubbio Basin

Caroline Malone and Simon Stoddart (eds.)

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 1994, 0-521-35568-0 / 9780521355681, First Edition, Hard Cover, New, New, 23 Cms x 29 Cms
Territory, Time and State is a study of long term archaeological history in the remote and beautiful upland valley of Gubbio within the Umbrian Apennines of Italy. The aim of the work is well defined by the natural constraints of this mountainous region. The authors have developed a multi-disciplinary approach to study the human and physical characteristics of the valley from the paleolithic to the medieval period. They integrate the analysis of a unique text (the Iguvine Tables) with excavation, field survey and environmental reconstruction to provide a synthesis of current knowledge. They break boundaries of time and tradition which are normally compartmentalised between different scholars. Although the linkage is sometimes controversial, it is always stimulating. The book has two major focuses: the first is on the Bronze Age landscape where spectacular sites and finds have contributed very significantly to our knowledge of pre-state Italy; and the second is on the identity and character of the early city state of Gubbio and its incorporation into the Roman world. Contents Part I. 1. Introduction Caroline Malone, James McVicar, and Simon Stoddart: Part II. The Environmental Setting; 2. Geology and geomorphology Mauro Coltorti; 3. Pedology Mirjam Schomeaker, Eric Van Waveren, Peter Finke, Rene Sewuster, and Jan Servink; 4. The Archaeology of Contact in Settler Societies, Tim Murray (ed.)
43 The Archaeology of Contact in Settler Societies

Tim Murray (ed.)

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2004, 0-521-79682-2 / 9780521796828, First Edition, Paperback, Brand New, 18 Cms x 25 Cms
Several decades of research into the archaeology of contact in North America have laid the foundations for the global exploration of the archaeology of European colonization. It is significant, however, that archaeologists, unlike historians and geographers, have yet to develop a global account of contact and its consequences. This edited work presents case studies from nations developed from British settlement so as to allow historical archaeologists to examine differences and similarities between the histories of modern colonial societies world-wide. Written by an international team of experts, the work shows that historical archaeologies can assume marvellously different and suggestive forms when examined from the periphery. Furthermore, the imperatives of the periphery could result in different perspectives on North American and European archaeological contexts. The work also examines the role of a global vision of the historical archaeology of colonialism in providing a new basis for the evolution of the ‘nation? Contents 1. The Chinese Neolithic: Trajectories to Early States, Li Liu
48 The Chinese Neolithic: Trajectories to Early States

Li Liu

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2004, 0-521-81184-8 / 9780521811842, First Edition, Hard Cover, Brand New, Brand New, 20 Cms x 26 Cms
This book studies the formation of complex societies in prehistoric China during the Neolithic and early state periods, ca. 7000?500 BC. Archaeological materials are interpreted through anthropological perspectives, using systematic analytic methods in settlement and burial patterns. Both agency and process are considered in the development of chiefdoms and in the emergence of early states in the Yellow River region. Interrelationships between factors such as mortuary practice, craft specialization, ritual activities, warfare, exchange of elite goods, climatic fluctuations, and environmental changes are emphasised. This study offers a critical evaluation of current archaeological data from Chinese sources, and argues that, although some general tendencies are noted, social changes were affected by multiple factors in no pre-determined sequence. In this most comprehensive study to date, Li Liu attempts to reconstruct developmental trajectories toward early states in Chinese civilization and discusses theoretical implications of Chinese archaeology for the understanding of social evolution. Contents 1. Setting the scene; 2. The changing environmental contexts of China’s first complex societies; 3. Household subsistence and ritual; 4. Spatial organization and social relations in communities; 5. Community burial patterns; 6. Development and decline of complex societies in the central plains; 7. Development and decline of social complexity beyond the central plains; 8. Trajectories toward early states; 9. Reconstructing social processes. Quick search Advanced search...
