An Outline of Madhva Philosophy, K. Narain
1 An Outline of Madhva Philosophy

K. Narain

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 1986, 81-215-0030-3 / 9788121500302, Second Edition, Cloth, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The philosophy of Madhva is one of those systems of Indian philosophy which rose in revolt against the Absolute Monism of Samkara and his School and in this endeavour constructed a pluralistic and realistic system of Ultimate Reality based on the solid foundations of theism. His was an attempt to strengthen the old Vaishnavite tradition with a philosophical structure that believes in the absolute reality of every object of experience, accords to experience a supreme status as an instrument of knowledge, maintains the absolute reality of difference, considers both Self and Matter as different from God who is the instrumental cause of creation, sustenance, destruction and control of the world order and thus prescribes devotion and surrender to God as the means of achieving emancipation. All these problems of philosophy have been thoroughly discussed here. The author has systematically compared the Madhva position with the rival Advaita School to justify the validity of Sri Madhva's philosophical standpoint along with a comprehensive account of Madhva ontology. The author says: "In his epistemological analysis Madhva's die-hard realism is the reason of his uncompromising pluralism which stands a good comparison to some of the striking conclusions in contemporary Western Realism." "Madhva's theistic approach and his emphasis on the doctrine of Grace and Surrender have much in common with some of the important tenets of Christianity and has an important place in the history of religion and philosophy." Daniel Cozort and Craig Preston

Snow Lion Publications, Ithaca, New York, USA, 1-55939-198-7 / 9781559391986, First Edition, Paperback, New, New, 6 x 9 Inches
What are the most important points of difference between the major schools of Buddhist philosophy? This rich, medium-length survey offers a lively answer. The introduction, aimed at those new to Buddhist thought, sets up a dialogue between the schools on the most controversial topics in Buddhist philosophy. Jamyang Shayba was the greatest Tibetan writer on philosophical tenets. Losang Gönchok's Clear Crystal Mirror, a concise commentary on Jamyang Shayba's root text, represents a distillation of many centuries of Indian and Tibetan scholarship. Buddhist Philosophy skims the cream of Jamyang Shayba's intellect, providing a rare opportunity to sharpen our intellect and expand our view of Buddhist thought. Daniel Cozort is associate professor and chair of the Department of Religion at Dickinson College where he teaches the religions of India. He is the author of Highest Yoga Tantra. Craig Preston studied at the University of Virginia and has taught Classical Tibetan at Namgyal Institute. He is author of How to Read Classical Tibetan, Vol. 1: A Summary of the General Path and currently teaches Tibetan and Buddhist philosophy privately in Ithaca, New York. Printed Pages: 352. 001704

10 Language, Reality, and Analysis: Essays on Indian Philosophy

J.N. Mohanty (ed.)

E.J. Brill, Leiden, The Netherlands, 1990, 90-04-09305-2 / 9789004093058, First Edition, Hard Cover, Fine, 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The author applies the methods of latest linguistic analysis to the Indian theories of reality and the relation between language and reality. Special attention is given to the Advaita Vedanta and the Buddhist theories. The proper methods of philosophy, according to the author, is the logical analysis of language. In these essays he shows how this method is fruitfully employed in Vedanta and Buddhist philosophies. He also shows how the key Advaita concepts of avidya and adhyasa are results of logical analysis of ordinary propositional forms of cognitions, and not metaphysical theses about a transcendent reality. Of the eight essays collected in this volume five deal with Advaita Vedanta three of which directly interpret Samkara, the two others interpret the great Advaita philosopher Vidyaranya. There is also an essay on the logical basis of the Buddhist apoha theory. The concluding essay on "Spirit, Machine and Man" argues against the two extreme conceptions of man: materialistic and idealistic, and argues for the priority of a concept of person. ‘You are here, that much is certain. You are alert that you are here, that much is also certain. Now these two ingredients are enough for yoga experimentation.? In this book, part of a series, Osho expounds on the essence of Patanjali’s philosophy which is contained in his sutras. Elaborating on these, Osho says that though the sutras contain the key to understanding the self, they are ‘just introductory, just a preface to the real thing? The actual work, he feels, starts when one is ‘ready to change, to mutate, to become new? He maintains that the enlightened one has gone beyond the ego and knows the oneness of all things. Secrets of Yoga, the result of Osho's talks, is rich with insights from Osho's awakened consciousness. Replete with anecdotes, simple yet deep, the book contains his views on crucial issues like ego, death and spirituality. The voyage of self-discovery is enlivened with Osho's irreverent sense of humour. The book contains questions from various people keen to know themselves and Osho's candid answers that make for delightful reading even as they offer solutions to those mired in similar problems. Pithy and profound, Secrets of Yoga is an invaluable guide for those looking for inner peace and harmony. Printed Pages: 272. 017556

The Heart of the Buddha, Chogyam Trungpa; Edited By Judith L. Lief
19 The Heart of the Buddha

Chogyam Trungpa; Edited By Judith L. Lief

Shambhala, Boston, USA, 1991, 0-87773-592-1 / 9780877735922, First Edition, Paperback, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This compelling collection of essays, talks, and seminars by Chögyam Trungpa presents the basic teachings of Buddhism as they relate to everyday life. The book is divided into three parts. In "Personal Journey," the author discusses the qualities of openness, inquisitiveness, and good humor that characterize the enlightened Buddha-nature in everyone. In "Stages on the Path," he presents the three vehicles—Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana—that carry the Buddhist practitioner toward enlightenment. In "Working with Others," he describes the direct application of Buddhist teachings in such areas as relationships, children, and money. Chögyam Trungpa's great appreciation of Western culture combined with his deep understanding of the Tibetan tradition makes these teachings uniquely accessible to Western readers. The Sacred Path of the Warrior, Chogyam Trungpa
20 The Sacred Path of the Warrior

Chogyam Trungpa

Shambhala, Boston, USA, 1984, 0-87773-264-7 / 9780877732648, First Edition, Paperback, New, New, 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In this practical guide to enlightened living, Chögyam Trungpa offers an inspiring vision for our time, based on the figure of the sacred warrior. In ancient times, the warrior learned to master the challenges of life, both on and off the battlefield. He acquired a sense of personal freedom and power—not through violence or aggression, but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge. The Japanese samurai, the warrior-kings of Tibet, the knights of medieval Europe, and the warriors of the Native American tribes are a few examples of this universal tradition of wisdom. With this book the warrior's path is opened to contemporary men and women in search of self-mastery and greater fulfillment. Interpreting the warrior's journey in modern terms, Trungpa discusses such skills as synchronizing mind and body, overcoming habitual behaviors, relaxing within discipline, facing the world with openness and fearlessness, and finding the sacred dimension of everyday life. Above all, Trungpa shows that in discovering the basic goodness or human life, the warrior learns to radiate that goodness out into the world for the peace and sanity of others. The Shambhala teachings—named for a legendary Himalayan kingdom where prosperity and happiness reign—thus point to the potential for enlightened conduct that exists within every human being. "The basic wisdom of Shambhala," Trugpa writes, "is that in this world, as it is, we can find a good and meaningful human life that will also serve others. That is our true richness."
