Our heritage is rooted in local cultures and environments, yet the international bias of modern communication may threaten to degrade this inheritance. Is it possible to accommodate multinational companies and mass tourism, or to export concepts such as Disney World from one place to another without destroying valued vernacular traditions? This column addresses these questions and explores issues critical to the sustained use of the Earthís heritage for the cultural and economic benefit of local communities. 7 The Book of Indian Birds 13th Edition

Salim Ali

Oxford University Press, New Delhi, India, 2003, 0-19-566523-6 / 9780195665239, Thirteenth Edition, Hard Cover, New, New,
This much-awaited revised edition includes the extensive changes in the scientific and common bird names that have taken place since the last revision in 1996. Following the publication, in 2001, of the list of Standardized Common and Scientific Names of the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent in the Buceros 6 (1), the common and scientific names have been modified based on this list. It is expected that this will provide uniformity in the names used throughout the Subcontinent and outside, and help birdwatchers to communicate better while exchanging their observations. The Alternate Common Names given in the earlier edition have been removed. The Index of common names of species, giving plate and serial numbers, has been replaced with separate Indexes of Scientific and Common names according to page numbers. Minor errors that were overlooked in the earlier edition have also been rectified. Dr. Salim Ali last revised and enlarged the BOOK OF INDIAN BIRDS in 1979 when the eleventh edition was published. This edition described and illustrated 296 species, and was last published in 1992. Thereafter, it was decided that the Book should be enlarged to cover the common and interesting birds of all biogeographic zones in India to make the book a useful field guide for the Subcontinent. This revised and enlarged edition of the book is being brought out to commemorate the centenary of Dr. Salim Ali and his seminal contribution to the popularisation of the study of birds in India, which began with the publication of the 1st edition of the BOOK OF INDIAN BIRDS fifty-four years ago, in 1941. The edition covers 538 species, the descriptions of which have been compiled from Dr. Salim Ali s writings to maintain the same style and format. The illustrations are new and have been specially prepared for this edition by the noted bird artist Carl D Silva except for one plate on the mynas which was prepared by Dr. Salim Ali s favourite bird illustrator Mr. J. P. Irani. The 538 species have been accommodated in 64 plates. Each of the species illustrated in the plates has been provided with brief captions giving status, whether resident or migratory, size and form, key identification characters, habitat and distribution. The book ends, as did the earlier editions, with Dr. Salim Ali s notes on nesting, migration, bird watching, etc. The book remains a guide to the beginner and a handy reference for the serious amateur as well as for the professional ornithologists. 8 The Cultured Chimpanzee: Reflections on Cultural Primatology

W.C. McGrew

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2004, 0-521-53543-3 / 9780521535434, First Edition, Paperback, New, 228 x 152 Mm
Short of inventing a time machine, we will never see our extinct forebears in action and be able to determine directly how human behaviour and culture has developed. However, we can learn from our closest living relatives, the African great apes. The Cultured Chimpanzee explores the astonishing variation in chimpanzee behaviour across their range, which cannot be explained by individual learning, genetic or environmental influences. It promotes the view that this rich diversity in social life and material culture reflects social learning of traditions, and more closely resembles cultural variety in humans than the simpler behaviour of other animal species. This stimulating book shows that the field of cultural primatology may therefore help us to reconstruct the cultural evolution of Homo sapiens from earlier forms, and that it is essential for anthropologists, archaeologists and zoologists to work together to develop a stronger understanding of human and primate cultural evolution. ?First book to provide a synthetic analysis of chimpanzee culture, covering both material and social culture ?Models the origins and evolution of human culture using our closest living relatives, the chimpanzees ?A significant and stimulating book which examines how anthropology, animal behaviour and psychology must come together to truly understand the basis for human and animal culture Contents 1. Introduction; 2. Definition; 3. Disciplines; 4. Creatures other than primates; 5. Primates; 6. Chimpanzee ethnography; 7. Chimpanzee material culture; 8. Chimpanzee society; 9. Lessons from cultural primatology; 10. Does cultural primatology have a future? Printed Pages: 244 with 15 half-tones and 10 tables. 012811
