1 India's Water Resources: Contemporary Issues on Irrigation

A. Vaidyanathan

Oxford University Press, New Delhi, India, 2006, 0195682165 / 9780195682168, First Edition, Hard Cover, New, New,
Based on extensive empirical and analytical research, this collection brings together A. Vaidyanathan?s recent work on water resources management in India in a multidisciplinary perspective. The volume discusses the agro-climatic context, irrigation and agricultural technology, legal-institutional arrangements, and the economic environment. Rejecting the proposal of river interlinking, Vaidyanathan builds a strong case for a major shift towards integrated watershed development in rain-fed areas, reducing waste and overexploitation of water, and resulting in a more efficient use of irrigation water. The author discusses investments in groundwater development, extension of irrigation facilities, and major disparities between rain-fed and irrigated areas in detail. He strongly advocates reforms at the economic, legal, and institutional level as well as public funding of new research to improve the knowledge base for decision making. As irrigation is the largest user of water, the role of private supply sources is usually not studied. To fill this gap the author undertook a survey, the results of which are presented in the case study of Chennai city. 019700

This volume discusses key themes and issues in India's development since independence. The contributors are significant players in the development debate. Divided into sections examining macro trends, sectoral issues, and specific growth experiences, the collection brings out the enduring relevance of these themes in today's rapidly changing Indian economy. The macro-economy section examines shifts in the economic policy paradigm, quest for inclusive growth, sources of economic growth, and macroeconomic puzzles in the past decade The second section reviews the preference for land, India's savings performance since 1950, and recent technology policy initiatives Industrial growth in India and China, agriculture industry interactions, and the sacred cow controversy are discussed in section three The fourth section analyses strategies for labour movement and conceptual and measurement issues relating to employment and unemployment in developing countries, as well as growth of work opportunities in India The Kerala Model of Development and the factors behind the state's growth, as well as the outcomes of Democratic Decentralization in some other states are discussed in the final section 019716
