This volume of the Astadhyayi of Panini contains English translation of adhyayas four and five. It includes Sanskrit text of individual sutras with their transliteration, word-boundaries, indication of inflectional endings and formation of compounds. Each sutra is also furnished with anuvrtti, vrtti, examples, detailed explanatory notes, and complete derivational history of examples cited by the Kasikavrtti. Explanatory notes are presented to facilitate proper understanding of individual sutras, especially in view of their formulation, interpretation, application and relative placement. An attempt has been made to sort out and explain pertinent issues, as raised and discussed by major commentaries. The appendix contains nearly three hundred examples with complete derivational history. Over five hundred derivations have been discussed in notes under individual sutras, especially from the point of view of their relevance to the Paninian grammatical system. This volume is the fourth of a now planned six-volume study. The fifth volume of this series will cover the sutras of adhyaya six. The sixth and the last volume will include the remaining adhyayas, seven and eight. Printed Pages: 820. 033457

This unique book provides an introductory overview of modern theoretical linguistics which manages to be both accessible and humorous without sacrificing either scholarship of insight. In a series of magisterial vignettes Smith emphasizes the perennial necessity of appealing to linguistic theory if we are to gain any real understanding of the phenomena of language. However profound or however trivial the questions we raise and try answer - What exactly does one have to know to count as a speaker of a language? What would it mean for a language to have no vowels? Why do little children call lorries 'lollies'? Precisely what with this sentence is wrong? - we need to recourse to a theory even to make them coherent. In particular, the author argues that we can find solutions to our puzzles, and explanations for these phenomena, if we exploit on the one hand Chomsky's theory of Generative Grammar, and on the other Sperber and Wilson's theory of Relevance. Contents Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Why Theory? 3. Grammar and Gravity. 4. The Puzzle Puzzle. 5. Quails and Oysters. 6. The Oats have eaten the Horses. 7. Transformational Grammar: A First Course (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics), Andrew Radford
228 Transformational Grammar: A First Course (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics)

Andrew Radford

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 1989, 0-521-34750-5 / 9780521347501, Reprint, Paperback, New, Very Good, 15.5 Cms x 23 Cms
Andrew Radford’s new textbook is principally for students with little or no background in syntax who need a lively and up-to-date introduction to contemporary work on transformational grammar. It covers four main topics - the goals of linguistic theory, syntactic structure, the nature and role of the lexicon, and the function of transformations and the principles governing their application. The framework takes into account the major works such as Chomsky’s Knowledge of Language and Barriers written since the publication of Radford’s widely acclaimed Transformational Syntax in 1981. Not only does the present book use a more recent theoretical framework, but at the descriptive level it covers a wider range of constructions and rules than its predecessor. Andrew Radford is well known for his effective pedagogical approach, and in this book even more care has been devoted to providing a sympathetic and non-technical introduction to the field. At the end of each chapter are exercises which reinforce the text, enable students to apply the various concepts, etc. discussed, or encourage them to look more critically at some of the assumptions and analyses presented. The book also has a detailed bibliographical background section and an extensive bibliography which will be a useful source of reference to the primary literature. Although intended principally as a coursebook for students of syntax or English grammar, Transformational Grammar will be invaluable to any reader who needs a straightforward and comprehensive introduction to the latest developments in this field. Contents Prologue; Acknowledgments; 1. Goals; 2. Structure; 3. Phrase-markers; 4. Noun phrases; 5. Other phrases; 6. Clauses; 7. The lexicon; 8. Transformations; 9. WH movement; 10. Alpha movement; Bibliographical background; Bibliography; Index. Printed Pages: 640. 003112

229 Translating India

Rita Kothari

Foundation Books, New Delhi, India, 8175963050 / 9788175963054, First Edition, Paperback, New,
Post nineteen eighties, what made English translation from Indian languages a culturally desirable activity? This question leads Kothari to examine the changing cultural universe of urban, English-speaking middle class in India. She examines in detail readership patterns, attitudes to English, and the course of translation studies in general. The comfort with which English is used with an Indian language as in ""Yeh Dil Maange More"" or ""Hungry Kya"" reflects a sense of familiarity that has been made with English. From this broader context of bilingualism in the first part of the book, Kothari moves on to the state of Gujarat. Taking up the case of Gujarati, she demonstartes the micro issues involved in translations and politics of language. Kothari asks new questions in translation studies and makes the production, reception and marketability of English translation her chief concern. Translating India brings amultidisciplinary perspective to literature and translation, authenticity and representation. Contents Acknowledgements 1. Introduction 2. Recalling: English Translations in Colonial India 3. The Two-Worlds Theory 4. Within Academia 5. Outside the Discipline Machine 6. Publishers' Perspective 7. The Case of Gujarati 8. Vedic Grammar was published in 1910 in the important series Grundriss der Indo-arischen Philologie und Alter tumskunde (Encyclopaedia of Indo-Aryan Research), edited by Georg Buhler. There is in fact a much stronger and more convincing reason for reprinting this work, and this is the fact that it has not really been supplanted until the present day, at least not by a handbook written in English. Vedic Grammar is the greatest work of Professor Macdonell, a work by which he has taken his place among the greatest of orientalists. Printed Pages: 456. 029097
