The Armourers of the Rajputs, The Gadi Lohars, Whoes traditional home was Chittor, are today a wandering tribe, once they produced top quality weapons and armour for their masters. After the fall of Chittor to Akbar in 1567, they swore never to return to the citadel till it was freed. In the early 1950's Nehru personally led them back to a free Chittor, but their nomadic habits were too deeply ingrained in them. Printed Pages: 120. 022723

7 'Honour': Crimes, Paradigms, and Violence Against Women

Lynn Welchman and Sara Hossain (eds)

Zubaan, New Delhi, India, 8189013807 / 9788189013806, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New,
'Honour' brings together the practical insights and experience of individuals and organisations working in diverse regions and contexts to combat 'crimes of honour'. The authors examine strategies of response to such manifestations of violence against women, focusing largely on 'honour killings' and interference with the right to choice in marriage, and the related use and legal treatment of the defence of 'honour' and 'provocation' in different countries of Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and South Asia. This timely book is distinctive in approach and content, highlighting activist and practice-oriented academic perspectives from both the South and the North. The authors give voice to the struggle to locate 'crimes of honour' firmly within the international framework of violence against women and human rights rather than positioning these abuses as specific to particular cultures or communities. The first of its kind, this book serves as a resource in addressing 'honour crimes' and, more broadly, violence against women, and will be of interest to a multi-disciplinary academic audience as well as lawyers, policy-makers and activists. Contents Acknowledgements Preface: Violence against women and 'crimes of honour' Introduction: 'Honour', rights and wrongs 1. United Nations approaches to 'crimes of honour' 2. 27 108 Buddhist Statues in Tibet: Evolution of Tibetan Sculptures

Ulrich Von Schroeder

Serindia Publications, London, UK, 2008, 1932476385 / 9781932476385, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 240 x 345 Mm
Mostly unknown to the outside world, the temples and storerooms of Tibetís monasteries shelter a great number of ancient Buddhist objects. Not only are there a great number of Buddhist sculptures and paintings produced by Tibetan artists, but included also are rare examples originating from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Burma, and China. These images have withstood sometimes more than one thousand years of warfare and other calamities. Despite a growing number of books dealing with various aspects of Tibetan culture and religion, most publications have the shortcoming that they are almost exclusively illustrated with objects scattered worldwide in private and public collections. A notable exception is the two-volume chronicle Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet, published in 2001 by this author. However, it is monumental in scale and there is a need for a more affordable condensed edition. 108 Buddhist Statues in Tibet not only fills the need for such a volume, but also provides additional research and recently photographed discoveries. It is a comprehensive yet accessible guide to the stylistic development of Buddhist sculptures in Tibet. By using existing examples in monasteries, it also acts as a catalogue record of these objects that helps to ensure these objects remain there in the foreseeable future. This will enable future generations of scholars to do additional research with the same objects, unlike objects in private collections that are usually sold after some years. The book also includes a DVD of digital photographs of the 108 statues illustrated in this book and of the 419 most important Buddhist sculptures in the collection of the Jo khang / Lhasa gTsug lag khang. Some 311 of them were previously published in Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet. The remaining 108 sculptures will be illustrated in Jokhang Tibetís Most Sacred Temple, edited by Gyurme Dorje (to be published by Thames & Hudson). These 527 digital photographs can be downloaded free of charge by anyone, regardless whether for personal use or for publication. It is the hope of the author that other scholars will take use of this opportunity to publish some of these wonderful Buddhist sculptures. Printed Pages: 212 with 120 colour illustrations. 027808

17 Tomatoes : Tales from Kashmir is a series of linked stories that revolve around two Sikh boys coming of age in an Indian Army camp in Kashmir. Each story takes a minor character from the previous tale and builds a new tale, weaving a collective portrait of the border community. In addition to the boys, Adi (a student of gardens) and Arjun (a budding chemist), we meet a boatmanís daughter, a celebrity cricket umpire and Parachute Aunty. From modern missiles to cricket matches, from religious miracles to the sumptuous gardens of Shalimar and Nishat, Singh treats beauty, politics, and religion in a gentle and humane manner. But it is far from being just a series of fine photographs for it concentrates principally on the British mahogany furniture of the eighteenth century, a period when British design and craftsmanship reached its pinnacle, a fact amply verified by the sustained demand for these fine pieces. Yet it is a period which curiously enough has, apart from some specialist work, been largely neglected by serious writers on the subject for many years. The book contains some 475 black and white and 56 colour photographs. The illustration of so many fine pieces, as well as unusual items, superbly photographed, would in itself have earned this book a place on the shelves of anyone seriously interested in the subject. But there is an added bonus. A firm like Norman Adams prospers by the skill of the selection in buying ?a Ďgood eye??and it is this essential facility, succinctly expressed in the captions to the pieces in this book, which will ensure its lasting reputation as an important work of reference. The ancient Chinese art of feng shui is increasingly being adopted by many in their quest for personal peace and prosperity. Literally meaning `wind' and `water', it is a system of laws governing spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of positive and negative energies (chi). Although an elaborate art, it is not difficult to grasp when presented systematically. 80 Ways to Prosperity with Feng Shui sets out the principles and rules of feng shui, step-by-step, with practical applications and relevant examples focussed on the current time cycle (Period 8) which began in February 2004.
