2 A Concise History of Modern Architecture in India

Jon Lang

Permanent Black, New Delhi, India, 2010, 81-7824-305-9 / 9788178243054, First Edition, Paperback, New, 19 x 25 Cm
This is an invaluable book for those who want to understand the geography of their cities, as well as for students of Indian architecture. In lucid language that speaks to laymen and architects alike, Jon Lang provides a history of Indian architecture in the twentieth century. He analyses its tangled developments from the founding of the Indian Institute of Architects during the 1920s to the present diversity of architectural directions. He describes the often contradictory tugs of the international and the local as he reviews architects?efforts to be up-to-date in their work. Lang examines the early influences on Indian architecture both of movements like the Bauhaus as well as prominent individuals like Habib Rehman, Jawaharlal Nehru, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. He looks at monuments, museums, resettlement colonies, housing, offices and movie halls all over India in his wide-ranging survey. Over 150 photographs and line drawings explain and illustrate concepts outlined in the text.Printed Pages: 214. 032356

This book gives a detailed analysis of architectural designs found in Indian temples built in Karnataka in the period 1000-1300 AD, and a view on the architectural features common in all sophisticated temples built in medieval India. Indian temples are decorated with architecture in an ingenious way not found elsewhere in the world, and in medieval Karnataka that special use of architecture reached a climax. Both text and illustrations are a complete and unabridged publication of a Ph.-D.-thesis submitted at Leiden University (Leiden, The Netherlands) in 2003. 16 Architecture of Santiniketan: Tagore's Concept of Space

Samit Das

Niyogi Books, New Delhi, India, 2012, 9789381523384, First Edition, Hardcover, New, New, 23 x 29 Cm
Architecture of Santiniketan: Tagore’s Concept of Space is a search for the clues hidden in Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy and architecture that will link the past with the present. This book highlights Tagore’s architectural vision through his writings. A product of immense research and emotions gathered over fifteen years, Architecture of Santiniketan: Tagore’s Concept of Space extends beyond brick and mortar in an effort to understand the significance of the creation of space. It is an expression of the amalgamation of music, art, literature, poetry, letters and functional ornamentations. The book explains the different levels of this form of architecture and evaluates it in the context of the present artistic and cultural environment, while connecting it with the Bengal Renaissance. The present work documents different aspects of the cultural heritage of the district of Bastar. While the varied lifestyles of the Maria and Muria Gonds, and other groups, have been the focus of considerable anthropological research, relatively little is known of the numerous temples that represent the establishment of the Nagvansi dynasty in the 10th century and subsequently that of the Kakatiya. The ruins of Bhongapal and Garh Gobrahin are estimated to be older and bear testimony to the transitory efflorescence of the Buddhist and Vaisnavite faiths. Their influence on the socio-religious structure of the indigenous population is reflected in the village shrines, highlighting an on-going process of mutual enrichment. In illustrating the most important places of worship, an attempt has been made to explore the intersection of traditions. The subtle interplay of cultural interaction through time renders it difficult to distinguish the 'folk' from the classical, indicating the need to review our concepts of Indian art. 24 Beyond Bawa

David Robson

Thames & Hudson, London, UK, 2007, 0500342385 / 9780500342381, First Edition, Hard Cover, New, New, 27 x 29 Cm Richard Powers
Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa's forty-year career has become legendary. Beyond Bawa considers his continuing influence through the work of contemporary architects working in the region. Bawa achieved the harmonious and pleasurable fusion of local building traditions with modern forms. Throughout south Asia his legacy lives on in contemporary architectural practice and remains an important source of inspiration for generations of architects. Bawa was the principal force behind what is today known globally as ‘tropical modernism? and examples of his ideas can be found in Sri Lanka, Singapore and Bali but also in resorts and residences throughout wider Asia. An overview of Bawa and his contribution to contemporary architecture is followed by presentations of twenty-four contemporary architects, ranging from well-known practitioners such as Australian Kerry Hill to local talents such as Anjalendran. They reveal the long-lasting significance of Bawa’s uniquely sensitive approach to building and the landscape. This is the ideal companion to Geoffrey Bawa: The Complete Works and is an excellent introduction to current architectural practice in south Asia. David Robson is the authority on Geoffrey Bawa and delivered Bawa’s eulogy at the Aga Khan Award Ceremony. He worked as an adviser on housing and settlement planning to the government of Sri Lanka between 1979 and 1983 and was involved in its acclaimed ‘Hundred Thousand Houses?programme. Richard Powers is an internationally recognized photographer of architecture, interiors, lifestyle and gardens. He lives in Sydney. Printed Pages: 264 with 600 illustrations, 370 in colour. 021591

This three-volume book gives a complete survey of the surviving Hindu and Jaina temples in the northern half of Karnataka from the period AD 1000-1300. These temples form a homogenous body of monuments that is one of the most interesting in India. From an architectural point of view it is most interesting of all, because an important characteristic of Indian temples-is taken to its limits. Nowhere else in India, or for that matter in the entire world, the decoration of architecture with architecture is so abundant and so detailed. The ambition to be complete required a lot of fieldwork, because about 50 of the 220 monuments included have not been published before. But not only ‘new?temples were visited; without exception all temples presented in this book were seen at least once. During each visit many photographs were made. All of the approximately 1400 photographs published in the second and third volumes were made by the author. In addition to their scholarly value, the present volumes are very valuable for any layman with interest in architecture. This is because the monuments of the period are so extremely interesting for their sophisticated play with architectural elements, and because the photographs are so carefully taken and so instructive. With regard to photographs this book easily surpasses all others on old Indian temples. Printed Pages: 857 with 203 figures, 184 plates and 15 maps. 023652

Delhi is a city of continuity. The excavations at purana Qila indicate that the history of Delhi goes back to the first millennium B.C. Delhi is, therefore one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It is a city of many layers, each with its own story, where many-a city were built, destroyed and then rebuilt. Many of Delhi’s rulers played a dual role first as destroyers and then as builders. It is ironic that even after independence, we continue to destroy our heritage in the name of ‘development? This publication by INTACH Delhi Chapter is part of this process. In this publication, we have listed over 1200 buildings that are of archaeological, historical and architectural importance. We have surveyed the many ‘pasts?of Delhi’s long history and found buildings that are part of that multi-faceted story: the co-existence of diverse sacred centres, educational institutions and administrative structures, homes and palaces, political strongholds, markets, pleasure gardens, memories of war and monuments to peace. This publication contains a varied sample of the multiple layers of Delhi’s ancient history, material evidence of the richness of life and human creativity. However, as listing is a continuous process, we hope to build upon this effort. Printed Pages 737. 029816
