Translated by Jhampa Kelsang The original Sanskrit work was probably written during the fourth century A.D. It was translated into Tibetan by Vairochana and given to King Khri-srong lDe'u-btsan(755-797 A.D.) and to the royal court physician, the elder Yuthog Yontan Gonpo wrote 18 Supplements to it. It is most likely that after the famous international medical conference at Samye, Yuthog synthesized the best of the then known medical systems and rewrote the rGyud-bzhi Four Tantra. The last 20 years have seen an explosion of research and development in the neurosciences. Indeed, some have called this first decade of the 21st century ‘the decade of the mind? An all-encompassing term, the neurosciences cover such fields as biology, psychology, neurology, psychiatry and philosophy and include anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, genetics and behaviour. It is now a major industry with billions of dollars of funding invested from both public and private sectors. Huge progress has been made in our understanding of the brain and its functions. However, with progress comes controversy, responsibility and dilemma. The New Brain Sciences: Perils and Prospects examines the implications of recent discoveries in terms of our sense of individual responsibility and personhood. With contributing chapters from respected and influential names in neuroscience, law, psychology, philosophy and sociology, The New Brain Sciences should kick-start a discussion of where neuroscience is headed. ?Thought-provoking debate on the state of neuroscience research, with perspectives on social science and political implications ?Internationally recognised general editors ?Easy-to-read, popular style Contents Part I. 33 Tibetan Medicine and Other Holistic Health Care System

Tom Dummer

Paljor Publications, New Delhi, India, 81-86230-03-3 / 9788186230039, First Edition, New, New,
Western interest in Eastern forms of medicine such as acupuncture is wide-spread and growing-yet little attention has so far been given to Tibetan medicine. Tom Dummer describes its concepts and practice in a non-traditional way, thus making it more readily accessible to the Western mind. Beginning with an explanation of the basic elements of Tibetan medicine he describes the relevance of certain Buddhist concepts; the Tibetan analysis of bodily functions; functions; concepts of health and susceptibility to disease and methods of diagnosis and treatment. Analyses of the similarities between Tibetan and western holistic medicine to show how they may be practiced in conjunction is an important contribution by the author in the field of medicine. 002459

34 We the Billion: A Social Psychological Perspective on India's Population

Ragini Sen

Sage Publications, New Delhi, India, 2003, 0-7619-9681-8 / 9780761996811, First Edition, Cloth, New, New, 5.5" x 8.5"
Ragini Sen addresses the problem of population stabilisation from a new and different perspective. She contends that the issue of fertility cannot be treated as a problem of statistics alone as it involves people who are affected by social and cultural influences. Hence, the author emphasises the importance of a model which accords primacy to ‘soft?cultural variables and provides insights into collective beliefs. The author argues that an emphasis on the elimination of dowry and prioritising female literacy be made the focal points of a population policy. In addition, the author also calls for an examination of the role played by the mass media. Education, irrespective of religion, and the elimination of socio-cultural differences will lower fertility rates further. Finally, the book argues for the need to decentralise the population issue. Dr Sen also suggests that the ‘success stories?of districts within each state be benchmarked, and models based on these effective districts be made available to each state.
